What are Signs of Root Rot?

WP Law - Wednesday, September 15, 2021
repair

What does root rot look like? Most gardens love the humidity of the south, but sometimes too much of a good thing is just too much. When this happens, you can get root rot in your trees, shrubs, and flowering bushes. Here’s what to look for and what you can do about it.

Signs of Root Rot

With all the possible ailments your landscaping can get, it’s often hard to tell what’s what. When it comes to root rot, here’s what you can be on the lookout for:

  • Slow growth
  • Stems that seem soft and mushy
  • Wilting leaves
  • Yellowing
  • Curled up leaves
  • Rotten smell to the soil around the plant or tree
  • Red or reddish-brown roots
  • What to Do About It

You can’t always save a plant, bush, or tree once root rot has set in, but you can try. Start by reducing water to it and ensure proper drainage. Then, reduce the soil compaction around it to improve the nutrients getting to the root system.

    How to Prevent Root Rot

Preventing root rot is often easier than fixing it. Start with healthy plants with strong roots. Water them on a schedule and pay attention to your soil. Reduce watering when there’s lots of rain and in the cooler winter weather and increase it during the hot summer months. Be sure your drainage is effective in reducing excess water around the roots.

If you’re suspicious there’s some root rot in your garden and you can’t get it under control, call in a professional landscaper to assess the damage. Then, contact W.P. Law for the answers you need to bring your garden and landscaping back to life after root rot.

Is That Rust on My Lawn?

    WP Law - Wednesday, September 08, 2021
    repair

Rusty grass? Is that a thing? Indeed, it is, and you’ll probably know it when you see it. So here’s the low down on lawn rust and what you can do about it if it shows up in your yard.

    What Is It?

Lawn rust is a disease that primarily affects Tall Fescue, Bermuda, and Zoysia. Since these are all grasses prevalent in the south, rust might show up in your lawn. It’s a type of fungi caused by an infection in the grass and appears as an orange or rust powder on the blades. You might notice it as a rusty hue to your grass, or you might see the orange on your shoes after walking across your lawn. Lawn rust thrives in moisture and most often affects grasses under stress from shade or drought.

    How to Treat It

Lawn rust thrives when the soil is low in nitrogen, so a fertilizer with a nitrogen base can help. Treating your lawn with the right fertilizer and chemicals to prevent pests and help it become thick and healthy helps keep rust at bay. Make sure you also reduce the amount of thatch and increase levels of sunlight and air movement.

If you have rust on your grass, don’t despair. There are some simple ways to treat and prevent lawn rust. But, if you don’t feel confident treating it yourself, don’t worry, we’ve got your back. The landscape professionals at W.P. Law are standing by to answer your questions. Contact them today.

3 Tips for Mowing Your Grass

    WP Law - Wednesday, August 25, 2021
    repair

Mowing your grass might seem like a no-brainer, but some tricks can make it easier and better for your lawn. Take a look at these three tips for mowing your grass.

#1: Make Sure the Blades are Sharp

Sharp mower blades not only make quick work of getting the grass cut it’s also better for the grass. If the blades are dull, they tend to beat on the grass as they cut it, leaving it looking brown and dull instead of crisp and green. The rough edges left by worn blades are also more susceptible to disease and pests.

#2: Get Your Mower Height Right

The height of the blade isn’t as important as how much of the grass you cut. You should set the height, so it only cuts the top third of the grass blade. Cutting it too short can lead to brown spots and weakened roots. If your lawn is long, take the time to cut it a few days apart to get it the height you want without damaging the grass.

#3: Mow Late in the Day

The best time of day to mow your grass is early evening. You won’t stress the grass by cutting in the afternoon heat, and you won’t damage the roots by pushing a mower through the wet grass of early morning.

Many people get into a routine when it comes to mowing their grass but changing it up a bit can benefit your lawn. For more information on lawn health and caring for your grass, talk to the professionals at W.P. Law, Inc.

Why is There a Brown Patch on my Lawn?

    WP Law - Wednesday, August 18, 2021
    repair

Brown patches can appear on your lawn even if you have the most well-maintained yard in the neighborhood. They’re unsightly, frustrating, and it can be hard to determine the cause. However, there are a couple of common culprits that cause these spots. Take a look.

    Brown Patches from Grubs

Grubs are pests that eat the roots of your grass. They are beetle larvae and can cause enormous damage, especially considering how small they are. The brown patches from grubs tend to be soft and spongey with a uniform pattern of injury.

Brown Patches from Brown Patch Disease

Another common cause of the brown patches on your lawn is brown patch disease. Unlike the grubs, this disease is a fungus called Rhizoctonia. This fungus is most active in the summer, especially when it’s hot and humid. The patches are circular and usually a yellow/brown color. They have an outer ring where the grass thins out.

    Improper Lawn Care

There are a few things you might do with your lawn care that could cause the brown patches. They include:

    • Mower blades that are set too low, are dull, or have fungus on them
    • Too much fertilizer can damage the grass
    • Poor air circulation in the soil due to too much water or thatch buildup
    • Poor soil that no longer holds any nutrients to keep your grass healthy

    What You Can Do

Before treating the brown patches using guesswork and hoping for the best, you should call in a professional to evaluate the damage. You don’t want to treat the wrong issue and end up with a bigger problem on your hand. W.P. Law, Inc. is your local go-to professional. Contact them and start combating your brown spots today.

Low voltage outdoor lighting can add hours of illumination to your evening and enhance the aesthetic of your landscaping at night. Whether you want to get more enjoyment out of your outdoor living space or are interested in improving safety, this outdoor lighting option is worth your consideration. Take a closer look at the three top benefits of using low voltage lights for your home or business property.

#1: Minimize the Need to Change Bulbs Frequently

LED Low voltage lights last much longer than incandescent or halogen lighting systems. In some cases, they can last up to sixty times longer. Using these lower maintenance lights to illuminate your outdoor spaces means you won’t have to change the bulbs as often, saving you time and money.

#2: Increase Safety on Your Property

When it comes to safety, it’s hard to beat low-voltage lights. The lights pose far less risk of shocks and electrocution than traditional outdoor lighting systems. Additionally, potential burglars or intruders will be less likely to enter a residential or commercial property that is well-lit. This provides home and business owners with peace of mind.

    #3: Reduce Electricity Costs

Increased energy efficiency is one of the top benefits of LED low voltage light bulbs. They emit a more pleasant, higher quality of light while using only 20% of the energy that an incandescent bulb will use. As a result of using less energy, you will save on your electricity bill and still enjoy superior illumination for your property. The trusted team at W.P. Law, Inc. is here to help you find the right combination of low-voltage outdoor lighting to meet your needs and budget. Contact W.P. Law, Inc. now to get more information.

Tips for Choosing Landscape Lighting for Your Backyard

    WP Law - Thursday, April 15, 2021
    landscape light

The right landscape lighting adds that extra special something to your backyard living space. If you are ready to bring more enjoyment and comfort to your outdoor area, illuminating the backyard is a great place to begin. Determining the proper landscape lighting can be a challenge for many homeowners. If you are ready to light up your backyard but aren't sure how to start, take a look at these tips for choosing landscape lighting to achieve beautiful results:

#1: Decide What You Want to Highlight

One of the first things to consider as you choose your landscape lighting is what you want to illuminate. Do you have a specific area of your landscaping, fountains, walkways, or other features you would like to highlight? Choosing which features to bring in focus will help you know which type of lighting fixtures to select.

For example, ground lighting or path lights will be ideal if you want to highlight a walkway, whereas spotlights are ideal if you wish to illuminate trees or other features in your backyard.

#2: Choose Flood Lights, Spotlights, Path Lights or a Combination

Now that you know what to highlight, you can begin choosing your lighting style. If your budget allows, you can add a combination of floodlights, spotlights, and path lights. Or, if you are trying to keep things budget-friendly, begin with what you want to illuminate first and add in different types of lighting over time.

#3: Know the Differences Between Light Bulbs

The three primary light bulb choices for exterior lighting include:

    • LED
    • Halogen
    • Fluorescent

LED lighting will be a longer-lasting bulb that helps you conserve energy, while a halogen bulb will give you a high-intensity, white, bright light. Fluorescent lighting will be your most affordable option upfront, but the bulbs contain mercury, so they are a health risk if broken.

Outdoor Kitchens and Grills: 3 Helpful Questions to Ask Before Choosing a Design

    kitchen

Are you dreaming of an outdoor kitchen or grill? You can make that dream a reality. There are some questions you should ask yourself and your installation team before you choose a design. Here are three of the most helpful things to consider while you design.

#1: How Big Should It Be?

The question of space is an important one. How much do you think you need? You want to be sure you have the counter space you need for prep and serving, and room in front of and around the counter and grill to move around.

#2: What Amenities Would Be Good Choices?

Some people just want a gigantic grill to cook on, while others want more amenities. What would you get the most benefit from? Whether it’s a refrigerator, a wine chiller, an entertainment hookup, a bar counter, or all of the above, you can have it - you just need to include it in the design.

#3: What Materials Should You Choose?

Material choices are important not only to the design but also to the durability of your outdoor kitchen. You want to ensure it will stand up to the elements and the wear and tear of regular use.

You need to make many decisions when designing an outdoor kitchen or considering an outdoor grill installation. The good news is you don’t have to do it alone. Contact the experienced team at W.P. Law, Inc..

Have you been looking at pondless waterfalls and wondering if they’re a good idea? If you’re thinking about adding a water feature to your outdoor space, pondless might be the right choice. Take a look at three reasons a pondless waterfall is the way to go this summer.

    #1: The Safety Factor

A pondless waterfall circulates without a holding pond for water. Without the pond, you remove the risks of standing water. You won’t have a drowning hazard for small children and pets, a priority for many homeowners. You also won’t attract pests such as mosquitoes, and you won’t have to worry about algae and bacteria that are common in ponds.

    #2: Low Maintenance

A waterfall without a pond requires little maintenance. You won’t have to worry about fish, frogs, or other critters, and you won’t have to run it constantly. You can switch it on and off or put it on a timer.

    #3: A Beautiful Addition

If you love the sound of running, bubbling water, but don’t want the hassle of a full-blown pond system, a pondless waterfall is a great option. With custom design options, sizes to fit any outdoor space, and the beauty of a waterfall, it’s the way to go this summer.

    4 Do’s & Don’ts of Summer Landscaping

    WP Law - Thursday, July 09, 2020
    landscaping

Summertime is prime time for residential landscaping. It’s when everyone wants to spend time outside enjoying their backyards and outdoor living spaces. How does your landscaping look this year? Take a look at four dos and don’ts of summer landscaping to make your lawn and garden look their best.

    #1: Do Mow Regularly

Mowing regularly is an important way to keep your grass healthy and the roots strong. It also encourages new growth and helps it absorb more moisture.

#2: Don’t Cut the Grass Too Short

Cutting your lawn too short can damage the root system, and it can lead to your grass burning. It also weakens the grass stems and makes them more susceptible to disease and your lawn open to weed growth.

#2: Do Fertilize Your Lawn and Garden

Your lawn and garden need nutrients to grow and thrive. They can get what they need from the right soil, but most of the time, they need a little help. Fertilizing your grass, shrubs, trees, and flowers helps them grow strong and healthy and fight disease and pests.

Why a Pondless Water Feature Makes a Great Residential Fountain

    WP Law - Thursday, April 09, 2020
    residential-fountain

Are you dreaming of a residential fountain, but don’t have the space? A pondless water feature might be just what you’ve been looking for. Here’s what you need to know.

What is a Pondless Water Feature?

A pondless feature works by recirculating the water without a pond. Think of a waterfall without a pond at the bottom or a series of rocks that create a fountain, but without a pool of water as its base. A pump takes water from a reservoir situated in or below ground and sends it up through the water feature where it flows back down.

What Kind of Pondless Systems Create Fountains?

There are endless ways to create a water feature with a pondless water feature. It’s only limited by your imagination. Whatever space you have is enough to create a water feature with this type of system.

    What are the Benefits?

Fountains enhance your outdoor living space, transforming it from a backyard to an oasis. Water features create peaceful spaces enhanced by the sound of a waterfall or a babbling brook. They can fit any space, whether you have a small square of yard to work with or a huge piece of property. They are also low-maintenance and use very little energy to operate.

Adding water to your surroundings can bring peace and calm to your environment. A water feature or fountain is a great option for doing just that. If you’re interested in a pondless water system for your residential fountain, look no further than the experienced professionals at WP Law. Contact them today.

How to Keep Your Lawn Greener This Spring

    WP Law - Thursday, April 02, 2020
    lawn

Everyone wants a lush, green lawn, but do you know how to get it and keep it that way this spring? We have some tricks of the trade to help you get the green lawn you’ve been dreaming of. Take a look.

    Don’t Overwater

Your grass needs water, but not too much water. Overwatering can lead to grass that isn’t deeply rooted, and that doesn’t have that dark green color. You need to evenly water your lawn with 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week.

    Mow High

To maintain your yard, you want to mow it high. When you cut your grass too short, it can invite pests in as well as allow the tips to yellow. Anytime you trim more than one-third the height of your grass, it is going to struggle.

    Aerate

Aeration is the process of making small holes throughout your lawn. The goal is to create easier access for water, nutrients, and oxygen to reach the roots. It also improves drainage.

    Fertilizer

Specific fertilizer products get specific results. Using the right fertilizer and lawn chemical treatments on your grass can help keep your grass green. It’s like giving your lawn a nutritional supplement.

Do you want your yard to be ready for summer and outdoor living? Start by taking steps to get it green this spring. The team at WP Law,Inc has the know-how to help you do just that. Contact us today for a greener lawn tomorrow.

How to Keep Your Grass Green in the Summer

    WP Law - Thursday, August 08, 2019
    Green Grass

Improve your residential outdoor living with lush, green grass.

The state of your lawn is essential to pleasant residential outdoor living. Dry, brittle grass is no fun to look at or walk on. Compare that to a comfy cushion of dense, lush green grass. There’s no question which one inspires you to get outside and enjoy the nice weather. How do you maintain that healthy growth? Follow these tips to get the yard you really want.

    Aerate Your Lawn

Over time, the soil in your lawn gets packed down. This makes it hard for water and nutrients to penetrate the ground and reach the roots where it’s needed. Aeration breaks things up by removing plugs of soil from the ground. It’s best to aerate in spring or fall to protect the roots of your lawn.

    Water Deeply Once a Week

Contrary to popular belief, watering your lawn a few minutes every day of the week will not help your lawn. To grow a healthier lawn, you need to water the grass deeply, at the correct time of day, and make sure not to over-water. By doing so, the roots of the grass grow deeper into the soil helping your grass stay greener even in the driest month. You need to evenly water your lawn with 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week. You will need a reliable irrigation system to achieve this.

    Let it Grow

Too many homeowners trim their grass as low as possible. While you might think this allows you to go further in between mowing, it hurts the health of your lawn and creates more work for you in the long run. Check out the variety of grass you have in your yard and aim for the longest recommended length for the type.

If you need help making your residential outdoor living space as nice as possible, talk to WP Law, Inc., about improving the health of your lawn.

Easy Steps to Controlling Insects on Your Ornamental Shrubs

    WP Law - Friday, December 28, 2018
    control-insects-on-shrubs

Your accent shrubs are there for one reason - to make the rest of your yard look good! Pesky insects can keep your landscape from looking its best. Here are some easy steps to controlling insects on your ornamental shrubs.

How to Control Insects on Your Shrubs

    • Change your plant variety - Some plants are more prone to pests than others. When you are making a purchase, consider the pests that are around your area. For instance, if crape myrtle has a higher instance of aphids in your area, consider a different tree or choose a type that is more tolerant.
    • Keep your plants healthy - Shrubs that are healthy can better withstand small infestations. Since your shrubs will probably be in direct sunlight, you must be sure that they get the water and nutrition they need to keep from drying out.
    • Inspect all new entrants - Before you bring a new plant into your landscape, inspect it thoroughly for insect infestations. As they say, one bad apple can spoil the bunch.
    • Prune - Infestations can be controlled if you prune the infested parts of your shrubs before the insects spread to the entire plant. Take on this task in the early morning. Pests will be less active during these hours, allowing you better access.

The Next Move for Your Shrubbery

Give the dedicated landscape and outdoor living experts at W. P. Law, Inc. a call when you have an insect problem that needs a professional touch. We are here to ensure your landscaping looks its best, and your ornamental shrubs are a vital part of that look.

    DIY: Simplifying Winter Lawn Care

    WP Law - Tuesday, November 27, 2018
    winter-lawn-care

The last thing that will probably be on your mind during winter is your lawn. This is the time that you will spend the least amount of time thinking about your yard. However, this doesn't mean you don't have to take care of it during this season. There are still lots of things that you can do to keep your lawn in great shape throughout winter.

Here are some simple DIY winter lawn care tips that you should know.

    Aerate the Soil

One of the best ways of keeping your lawn healthy during winter is by aerating the soil. Aerating your lawn provides the much-needed air for lawn’s root system. Aeration can be done by hand, but power aerators are available for rent at most equipment rental centers for a reasonable price. Power aerators not only make the job easier, but they also do a much better job of aerating the soil.

    Keep It Clean

Keep lawn debris, such as leaves and fallen branches picked up on a regular basis. Leaves and other debris can shade out and kill areas of turf over the winter.

    Mowing

It's important to keep cutting your grass during the weeks before winter so that it is as short as possible at the end of the growing season. Shorter grass discourages nesting by mice and other animals which may damage large areas of your lawn.

Do you have any questions about winter lawn care? Contact W.P Law Incorporated today on everything about lawn care and maintenance.

3 Ways to Keep Your Water Feature Mosquito Free

    WP Law - Thursday, August 30, 2018
    water-feature

Water features add a lot of appeal to any landscape, but they also tend to attract mosquitos. Mosquitos are drawn to water because they need it to reproduce. However, there are at least three ways to keep your water feature mosquito free.

    1. Install a Fountain

Mosquitos don’t like water that moves. They prefer still water because that’s where they can lay eggs and reproduce. So the very best thing you can do to eliminate mosquitos is to install a nozzle in your water feature.

    2. Use Vinegar

Pouring vinegar into your water feature is another way of eliminating mosquitos. The vinegar alters the pH balance of the water so that it’s not conducive for mosquito reproduction. It will also ensure that any mosquito eggs that have already been laid don’t hatch, as well as killing off any existing mosquito larvae. You would need to add 15 gallons of vinegar for every 100 gallons of water in the feature. For best results, repeat this every month, since the vinegar may evaporate over time.

    3. Stock With Fish

If your water feature contains fish, the mosquito population will be kept in control naturally. Fish such as Koi and Shubunkins feed on mosquitos and other insects. Some varieties of fish can eat up to 100 larvae every day.

Each of these three methods will keep your water feature mosquito free. Of the three, the nozzle is the one with the least maintenance, and it also adds an attractive element to your water feature, contact us today!

Three Lighting Tips to Get the Most Out of Your Outdoor Space This Spring

    WP Law - Thursday, April 05, 2018
    lighting-tips-outdoor-space

It's finally spring, which means that you and your family can enjoy spending more time outdoors. This is also a good time of year to ensure that your landscape lighting allows for maximum illumination and safety.

    Choose the Most Effective Bulbs

At W.P. Law, we're proud to offer low-voltage landscape lighting from Integral Lighting and Kichler Lighting. You will need a step-down transformer to convert utility power from your lights to a low value so it can power the lamps. Low-voltage landscape lighting typically operates with a voltage less than 30 but can get to 12 or even lower. We would be happy to help you select the right light bulbs to set a relaxing mood for your outdoor space.

Combine Lighting Types for Improved Visual Effect

Overall lighting illuminates the entire surface area or you might want to consider task or accent lighting. Task lighting allows you to focus on one functional area while accent lighting highlights an object or architectural piece that you're especially proud to display. It gives your space a fuller appearance when you use a combination of lighting types.

    Be Mindful of Your Neighbors

It's important to be considerate of those around you when setting up your landscape lighting display or adjusting it in the spring. You never want the light to shine into your neighbors' homes or into someone's eyes. To avoid this, consider using glare guards or lighting shields.

Don't hesitate to contact us at 803-461-0599 with additional questions about landscape lighting or complete this online form for other services.

3 Myths of Residential Water Feature Care

    WP Law - Thursday, January 25, 2018
    Bird Bath

Backyard water features and ponds have over the years had a bad reputation for being high maintenance but that's not the case. Today, there are new technologies and techniques that one can use to keep your personal paradise low maintenance. In this article we debunk myths that you have heard so many times making you shy away from landscape water features.

Here are some of the myths:

Myth 1: You need to test the water daily and apply corrective treatment

Your water feature is not chemical dependent and therefore you do not need to test the water on a daily basis. Learn from Mother Nature. She never tests the water in lakes, rivers and natural ponds. In the wild, no store-bought chemicals are needed. Your water feature does not need them either. Stick to ecosystem water gardening and do away with the water testing.

Myth 2: All water features should be in the lowest part of the yard

The lowest part of the yard is probably the worst place to locate your water feature. Why? Because being the lowest part of the yard, run off water will collect there and interfere with the water feature. Water features are best positioned near the house so you can take in the tranquility and beauty of it while still in the comfort of your home.

Myth 3: It is necessary to drain and clean the water feature regularly

Draining and cleaning of a residential water feature should take place twice a year. Cleaning should be done during spring before it gets warm and bacteria have an opportunity to set up and then again in the fall to remove any fallen leaves.

Are you considering adding a water feature in your yard? Go ahead. Do not let the myths stop you. If you have any questions concerning water features, contactWP Law today for advice.

3 Key Factors to Consider in a Portable Water Pump

    WP Law - Thursday, September 14, 2017
    Pool Water Pump

Water pumps are useful tools used in a myriad of applications in the residential, agricultural and light commercial sphere. When choosing the ideal water pump, there're different features that you're going to factor in. Below are the key things to consider in a portable water pump.

    Weight

If it were a stationary water pump, then the weight factor should not be an element of concern since you're going to leave your pump in the same place most of the time. However, for portable water pumps that are constantly relocated from one place to the other, it's important that you choose a lightweight design.

    Energy source (gas or electricity)

Choosing the energy source that will power the pump is an important aspect that you should consider. Both of the energy sources have their unique benefits, limitations and are ideal for different tasks.

An electric water pump is commonly used where electric power is readily available. Unlike the gas water pumps, the electric versions of the pumps are quieter, more efficient and do not require as much maintenance. On the flip side, the gas (or diesel) powered versions are more versatile and can be placed wherever they are needed without the need for an electrical power source.

    Flow rate

The flow rate is the volume of water that is pumped over a given time. This is typically measured in gallons per minute (GPM). The flow rate will determine how fast you will be able to get your job done. Depending on the intended use of your portable water pump, you can choose different flow rates.

Whether it's just draining water from your swimming pool or for your lawn sprinkling purposes, choosing the right water pump will make your water pumping endeavors a memorable experience. If you would like to know more about the portable water pumps, contact our experts at W. P. Law, Inc. for more information.

    Duo Pro dual-contained piping system

If you have a water fountain, pond or waterfall, you know how relaxing it is to sit by the water and enjoy the tranquility of the moment. However, to fully appreciate your water feature, you have to maintain it properly. Without the right care, you will find yourself sitting next to a murky green pond or looking at a slimy water fountain. Also, a neglected water feature can detract from your property's appeal. Fortunately, it is pretty easy to keep your fountain looking crystal clear. The first steps in caring for your water feature are to:

    1. Check the water level-Make sure that the water pump is running at all times and that the pump is covered with water.

    2. Remove debris and leaves-At least twice per week, skim the pond's surface to remove any debris.

    3. Scrub the Fountain-Drain your fountain once a month and clean it with a brush and mild detergent.

What are the Right Chemicals for my Water Feature?

With all of the different chemicals available for ponds and water features, it might be difficult to know which ones you need. Here are some of the most common chemicals that are used to clean water features.

    • Algaecide-An algaecide will help eliminate algae from fountains, streams and water features. Choose one that works in all temperatures.
    • Foam Remover-Foam is a common problem in indoor and outdoor water features. It is caused by excessive organic compounds that are left behind by animals, plants and bacteria. A foam remover will help keep the foam from forming in your fountain.
    • Sludge Cleaner-This usually contains beneficial bacteria and will help maintain a strong biological balance in your water garden or pond and keep your rocks and gravel sludge-free, as well.

    Duo Pro dual-contained piping system

For many people, an outdoor kitchen is a way to expand their living space and bring the outdoors into their home; however, these same people may be struggling to find ways to integrate their outdoor kitchen with the rest of the home. For those looking for advice regarding their outdoor kitchen, there are a few ways to better integrate this home addition with the rest of the home itself.

    Choose the Right Location

Before even starting with the outdoor kitchen, it is vital to pick the right spot for this addition to ensure it integrates well with the rest of the home. Place the outdoor kitchen near the eating and dining area so that it is easy to run dishes between the outdoor kitchen, the serving area, and the hungry people. If the location is chosen well, the outdoor kitchen will see more use and feel like a part of the home.

    Bring the Indoors Outside

To further integrate the outdoor kitchen, it is important to bring the indoors to the outdoor world. This means buying reliable appliances that are intended for outdoor use. Make sure there is a place to store the cooking equipment to cut down on the time spent running between the inside and the outside. Add a little bit of ambiance or seating to the outdoor kitchen as well. This will encourage people to make use of the outdoor kitchen and unite the indoor and outdoor worlds into one.

Tips on Maintaining Your Garden’s Pond This Summer

    Marketing W. P. Law, Inc. - Tuesday, April 18, 2017
    Duo Pro dual-contained piping system

Ponds provide a beautiful centerpiece for any garden, but only if you maintain them properly. Summer weather complicates maintenance, but through the following tips, you can keep your pond beautiful no matter the season:

    Astute Aeration

If your pond contains fish, it is essential to increase the aeration. Hot weather lowers the water's oxygen content while simultaneously making the fish consume more oxygen. To save your fish, it is necessary to step up the aeration

    Comprehensive Cleaning

Clean your filter as necessary throughout the summer. The typical filter needs to be cleaned on a weekly basis, but the specifics vary by device, so follow the manufacturer's instructions. If you use a biological filter, don't clean it more intensively than instructed, as this will kill salutary bacteria.

    Replenishing with Rainwater

The summer heat can evaporate pond water, so replenish it as needed. Because tap water contains fluoride and other nutrients that cause algae growth, however, it is not ideal for your pond. Instead, collect and use rainwater.

    Dealing with Debris

Leaves, twigs, and other debris that accumulate in your pond can trap fish and animals while disrupting the water’s beauty. Remove them with a net, but leave some around the edges so that larger creatures can enter and leave the pond. When you remove debris, wash it in a bucket first, and if any creatures come out, return those to the pond.

Tips for Choosing the Best Grill for Your Outdoor Kitchen

    WP Law - Monday, February 27, 2017
    Grill

Outdoor living spaces are becoming very popular. If you’re looking for a new grill for your outdoor kitchen, it can be difficult to know which grill will best suit your style and space. Here are some valuable tips for choosing the best grill.

    Think About Storage Options

Even in South Carolina, the weather can get intemperate sometimes. When that happens, you’ll want to be able to protect your grill from weather extremes. If you sometimes go away for vacations, that’s another time you’ll want to cover or store your grill. Think about what storage options the grill has, and whether that will be sufficient for your needs.

    Consider the Grilling Capacity

Compact grills are ideal for decks and patios with little space, or for small families. But if you have a large extended family or like to host backyard BBQ parties, you’ll be happier with a larger grill that has the surface area to cook lots of food at one time. This will allow you to put food on the table faster so guests and family can eat at one time instead of standing in line for more burgers.

    Consider Built-In Models

If you are like to grill outside on most days, you might be better off with a built-in grill. These models are designed to fit in nicely with the motif of an outdoor kitchen and will help your family to relax outdoors while you cook. Built-in grills add to the décor and frequently offer extra amenities like warming trays, coolers and food prep areas.

Maintain your backyard water feature with these 4 tips

    WP Law - Thursday, October 27, 2016
    Pond

A water feature or fountain can add something truly special to your yard - a dynamic layer both when seen and when heard. As long as it is running it draws attention. Some water features can even attract birds. When your fountain stops running it can quickly become an eyesore. Here are some tips for maintaining a fountain or water feature.

    1. Cleaning

Fountains should be cleaned every one to three months. Additives to reduce algae are also useful. Larger water features benefit from a deep clean every spring and fall, including an inspection for leaks. Ponds should be skimmed weekly to remove leaves and other debris.

    2. Keep things moving

Static features such as ponds should still have water circulated with a pump. Aerating the water reduces algae buildup and prevents mosquito larvae from hatching. It can also attract birds more than a stagnant pond. If you have fish in your pond they need a certain level of aeration to breathe properly - talk to an aquarist about the specific needs of the fish you are keeping. It is worth considering adding at least a couple of insectivorous fish to control mosquitos.

    3. Check pumps regularly

Pumps can easily become clogged. Filters and screens reduce, but don't eliminate this - any debris gathered on the screen should be removed often. If there is any change in water level or any odd noise from the pump, check it immediately. If you turn your water feature off for the winter, then try to store the pump inside. This is particularly important for pondless water features.

    4. Shade your feature.

Direct sunlight increases water evaporation, potentially causing problems with your pump and increasing the risk of algae. If you have a pond that is not located in a shady location, add shade plants around the edge to shade about 60 percent of the water surface.

If you are in doubt, then contact an expert. WP Law, Inc. has the expertise to repair and maintain fountains and residential water features, and they can both install and repair water features and advise you on the best way to do it yourself.

Determining the right sump pump to use for your space

    WP Law - Thursday, October 20, 2016
    pond

How hard could it be, right? You go to the nearest home improvement retailer, buy the pump that looks like the best deal, and 30 minutes later you are ready to install. Except it’s not as simple as that. The sump pump you choose now could prevent a lot of issues later. Even worse, it could add to them.

    Submersible vs. Pedestal

Submersible pumps—those that are installed below water—are preferred in most situations. For one thing, being underwater makes them less prone to overheating. But your space may not accommodate a submersible pump, which means you will need to consider a pedestal pump. You will also need to consider the capacity of the impeller and the size of solids it can handle. One that is too small may clog easily and often.

    Size matters

Sump pumps are available in a variety of horsepower options. However, even choosing between pumps with 1/3 or 1/2 HP can have consequences. If you select a pump with too little horsepower, it will not be able to keep up with water flow in some situations. A pump with too much HP will cycle on and off more than it should, which can damage the pump.  Therefore, you must estimate the gallons per hour (GPH) your sump pump will need to handle at the highest rate of flow.
Other issues to consider include mechanical vs. pressure switch, how to estimate the rate of water flow in your space, and more. Even if you do choose the right sump pump, proper installation is never a given. And that can also affect the performance of a sump pump.  Therefore, we at WP Law, Inc. would love to learn more about your requirements. We can help you choose the right fit for your space needs before you invest your first dollar. To discuss your plans further, please contact WP Law, Inc. to talk with one of our sump pump experts. It could save you a lot of hassles down the road.

5 Tips When Planning An Outdoor Kitchen Area

    WP Law - Thursday, July 28, 2016

When crafting your ideal outdoor living space, you’re overwhelmed with options from modern-style furniture to old-fashioned stones. Obviously, you want to want a space that’s functional. However, you also want the area to wow guests. Here are some factors to consider when choosing the elements in your outdoor kitchen area.

    1. Size Matters

What you're doing with your outdoor kitchen area should reflect in the design. For instance, if you're going to cook for a large crowd, you need a large space.

    2. Think of Function

One of the main focal points—and one that’s the most functional—is the grill. You want one that fits your needs. If you don’t grill much and don't grill foods in large quantities, you don't need a large grill. You'll just be wasting space and charcoal or fuel.

    3. What You Grill With Matters

Make sure when you design your area, you think about what you plan on cooking with. You might want to consider a charcoal-gas combination grill if you don't have a preference or enjoy both.

    4. What You Grill

Take into consideration what you typically grill and what you'd want to grill. You can create an ideal space with burners and multiple-layer grates. Consider if you want space to hang or store your utensils for the convenience of not having to walk in between your home and outdoor kitchen.

    5. Location

Location is everything when planning for a kitchen outside. You need to keep in mind whether you want it right off of your home or further away. You need to determine how much landscaping is required in order to create the space. You don't always want a gigantic project that requires a great deal of time and money.

You want your dream outdoor cooking space, but you need to take into consideration a few factors. These tips help to optimize the space you have. Not to mention, you must keep in mind your goals during the design phase. To learn about building an outdoor kitchen space in your area, contact the experts at W. P. Law, Inc. today.

Can I Use A Sump Pump For My Water Feature?

    WP Law - Thursday, June 23, 2016
    water feature

A sump pump is designed to remove water from the sump basin of your home's basement. However, in some cases, you can use these pumps for other purposes. In most cases, if your sump pump is compatible to use with a residential fountain, pond or other water feature, its box will note that fact.

If your sump pump is not compatible with residential water features, it will likely do the simple job of pumping water, but there will be several drawbacks.

    Lack of Energy Efficiency

Sump pumps use more energy than many other types of pumps. If you use a sump pump instead of a submersible or external garden feature pump, you will unnecessarily waste energy and drive your bills higher than they should be. In contrast, a garden feature pump with a direct or magnetic drive can help to keep your energy costs under control.

Not Designed to Be Used Constantly

Sump pumps only turn on as needed. When used in basements, their on-off switch is triggered when the water in the sump reaches a certain level. They are not designed to be used all day long. Unfortunately, however, most residential water features require constant pumping.

    Run Hot

In addition, because they are not designed to run constantly, sump pumps tend to become very hot if you leave them on. The heat they generate can increase the temps of water to levels that are intolerable to fish or that encourage the growth of certain algae. Finally, these pumps don't have built-in elements to stop them from overheating, and as a result, their motors may become too hot and burn out, forcing you to replace them.

Luckily, although sump pumps aren't suitable for most residential water features, there are great alternatives. The pump you should select varies based on the size of your water feature, your climate, whether or not you have fish and several other factors. Want to find the perfect pump for your water features? How can I improve the flow of my pond pump?

    WP Law - Thursday, May 26, 2016
    small pond

A backyard pond, of any size, can help give your landscaping a serene, peaceful air. Ponds can also add year-round interest to your perennial beds and be a home for decorative fish like koi. However, one of the key secrets to keeping your pond healthy is making sure that you have enough water circulating through your pond. Too little and your pond can develop algae and become an eyesore rather than an oasis.

Ways To Improve The Flow Of Your Pond Pump

To keep the water flowing steadily through your pond pump, consider the following:

    1. Make sure that you have the correct sized pump. Pumps that are too large or too small for the size of your pond will work inefficiently, restricting the water pressure and flow.
    2. Check the pump system periodically for blockages. Like any outdoor plumbing system, dirt, leaves, and other debris can get lodged in the hoses connected to the pump or in the filter and cause your system to underperform. Such debris can also cause your pump motor to have to work harder (for lesser results), shortening its lifespan.
    3. Make sure your piping is properly sized. Undersized pipe creates more friction loss which can reduce the flow because the pump operates further left on its performance curve.

To learn more about keeping the pump in your outdoor water feature running smoothly, contact W.P. Law Inc. today. We've been helping Carolina homeowners, like you, with their pond and irrigation needs for more than 40 years.

3 Possible Reasons Why Your Pond Is Losing Water

    WP Law - Thursday, April 28, 2016
    Small Residential Pond

Having a pond or a water feature in your back yard is relaxing and adds charm to most any property. Ponds are also versatile. You can stock them with fish and beautiful aquatic plants or simply enjoy their restful and decorative effect. However, one of the few problems commonly associated with backyard ponds is losing water. While some evaporation is to be expected, a rapid decline in the water level can be a symptom of a more serious problem. Losing water in your pond can also be expensive and put your fish and aquatic plants at risk.

Why is my pond losing water?

    1. There's a leak in your pond plumbing. While a pond may look natural, it actually operates with a plumbing system that circulates the water and allows you to add water easily. If leak develops in a pipe or fitting, your water level will decline.
    2. There's a leak in your pond liner. Some ponds use a soft vinyl liner; others have a hard shell liner. Either way, if this liner is punctured, you'll start losing water out of your pond.
    3. The edges of your pond liner have become unattached. Many pond liners are secured by tucking the edges of the liner underneath rocks that line the perimeter of the pond. If one or more of these rocks becomes dislodged, water can escape from the pond into the ground surrounding the pond.

If you notice your pond losing more water than can be explained by evaporation, you need to have a pond specialist evaluate the situation. Ignoring the problem can not only cost you extra dollars on your water bill, but also can cause your fish and pond plants to suffer and even die. To learn more about keeping your pond from losing water and/or repairing an existing leak, contact W.P. Law, Inc. We've built our company on finding economical solutions to our customer's problems.

How can I get an old well into working condition again?

    WP Law - Thursday, March 10, 2016
    Old Well

An older, nonworking well can seem like nothing more than a nuisance on your property. Even if you've been at the location for years, old, nonworking wells can be revitalized. If you are thinking about bringing back into service here are a few things to consider.

    Inspecting the Problem

The first step is always to determine the underlying problem and the overall condition of the well. If you have yet to do so, hire a professional well driller to provide a full inspection. Remember, too, that conditions can change and information passed down from other owners can differ from actual circumstances.

An inspection will confirm critical information about the well such as the depth and flow rate. It will also determine the condition of the mechanical components of the well such as the pump, motor, wiring and casing. Water quality is also a big issue depending on how the well will be used and water testing is often necessary. This information gathering can then outline a few steps you can take to get that old well back up and running again.

    Assessment, Treatment, Replacement

A customized solution for your well is necessary. It may involve these three elements:

    • Assessment: Evaluate the physical characteristics of the well, the condition of the pumping equipment, and the water quality.
    • Treatment: Treating the well with chlorine may be necessary to kill harmful bacteria.
    • Replacement: Replacing the pump, pump motor, wiring, and drop pipe will allow for many years of renewed service.

Which is the right solution to your well problem? That depends on many factors. If you are considering drilling a new well, hold off long enough to have a professional out to look at your current well or an older well on the property. Of course, it is helpful to know why this well is no longer used, but many times the right help can help resolve these problems for you.

W.P. Law, Inc. is here to help you. Contact us today to discuss the specific areas of concern you have as well as why you think your old well is no longer usable. Chances are good repairs and replacements can happen to help get that well back up and operational in no time.

3 Things To Watch Out For With Your Pond Pump This Winter

    WP Law - Thursday, February 18, 2016
    Backyard Pond in Winter

If you have a backyard pond or water feature, you know how peaceful and serene the sound of bubbling water can be and how relaxing it is to spend an afternoon fishing. However, these pleasures are dependent on a healthy pond and pump. It's the pump that keeps the water moving, an action that not only sounds serene, but helps to keep algae from forming in your pond and adds essential oxygen to keep your pond fish alive. Proper winter care and maintenance of your pond pump is essential to keeping your pond's eco-system healthy.

How to winterize your pond pump this winter

    1. Turn off the pump when the water temperature reaches 40 degrees. In the south, you can usually keep you pond pump running all year round. In colder climates where ponds can freeze over during the winter it is usually a good idea to shut things down for the winter. Water can freeze in pipelines and cause damage to the system including the pump if is becomes starved for water.
    2. Shovel or sweep the snow off of your pond. Some plant growth is necessary to provide oxygen for your fish and sunlight is essential to the photosynthesis process. Too much snow atop the ice on your pond can keep the sunlight from reaching the underwater plants, thus starving your fish of oxygen.
    3. Consider draining the pond. If you have a small water feature that does not contain fish, you may want to consider draining the pond and removing the pump. This will make it easier to clean things up and get started in the spring and you eliminate the possibility of freeze damage to you pond pump.

What Chemicals Should You Apply to Your Grass? When Should You Do So?

    WP Law - Wednesday, January 27, 2016
    Residential Lawn

Having a green, beautiful lawn may be easier to do than you think. In fact, the right chemical application at the right time can make a significant difference in the way your lawn looks and its overall health. If you, like many others, get overwhelmed with the number of steps to creating that lush lawn, these tips can help make the process easy to remember.

What Chemicals and Nutrients Does Your Lawn Need?

Fertilizing your lawn gives it the nutrients it needs to grow and flourish. It helps to prevent disease, overcome disease and stress, improve color, and reduce pests. There are three major nutrients your lawn needs and these are the nutrients any application of feed should contain:

    • Nitrogen (N)
    • Phosphorus (P)
    • Potassium (K)

When looking at chemical products, nitrogen, the most important nutrient is listed first followed by phosphorus and then potassium. The most common recommendation is 3:1:2 or 4:1:2.

    Feeding Your Lawn in Spring

During the spring months of February through April, it is essential to strengthen the roots of your lawn. To do this, you'll want to apply products that will:

    • Prevent crabgrass from growing using a pre-emergent
    • Apply a fertilizer just after the first cut that feeds the lawn.

In the later months of spring, such as from April through June, it's important to add a weed and feed product with a weed control in it.

    Summer Months

During the period of June through August, you'll need to feed your lawn again, at least, one time every 0 to 45 days. This gives your grass the ability to handle foot traffic, drought, and heat. It is also a good time to add an insect control.

    Fall Months

During September through November, it is time to use a fall feed as well as a turf builder to strengthen the lawn for the upcoming winter months.

    Let the Pros Help You

While adding the right chemicals to your lawn is essential to creating the right balance of health and growth, every lawn's needs are different. If your lawn is very new or not there, you need a higher level of nutrients than a lawn that is already in good shape. It is best to have an expert on hand to answer your questions and to create the very best results. Contact our team to ask questions and to get the right solutions in place right away.

Troubleshooting: 3 Common Sump Pump Issues

    WP Law - Friday, January 22, 2016
    Old Sump Pump

It is happening again - your basement is backing up and there's water coming in from the walls. It could be due to a failure with your sump pump. This system works to remove water from the drain tiles surrounding a home and moves it out into a sewer system or otherwise away from the home. In some homes, it is critical to keeping the home dry. Consider these common causes of sump pump failures.

    1. Power Failures

The most common cause of a sump pump failing to work is a power failure. If your power goes off in a storm, it's important to get it restored quickly to ensure your sump pump is operational. Secondary options for homes with significant drainage problems include using a battery back-up or using a generator.

    2. Poor Installation

Sump pumps can be troublesome to install and maintain because they need to be just right. If the sump pump is the wrong size, such as being too small for the area, it cannot meet demand and will not perform as it should. Second, if the pump is not installed according to the manufacturer's instructions, even small mistakes can lead to significant complications. A check valve installed, for example, is easily overlooked by many homeowners. However, most manufacturers recommend this to ensure that back-flow of water doesn't cause the pump impeller to rotate in the wrong direction.

    3. Poor Maintenance

You do need to maintain your system. To do that, consider these tips:

    • Many homes require backup pumps. If you have one, unplug the first one and run the secondary one for a few days to ensure it is working properly.
    • Test the pump to ensure it is discharging water properly. Go outside to look for this. Do this every month.
    • Ensure the air hole in the discharge line is clean and clear.
    • Listen to the motor running. Does it sound normal and smooth?
    • Ensure the float is not restricted.

It is often best to have a professional inspect and repair your sump pump if it is not working properly. This can help you avoid thousands of dollars worth of damage from an incoming flood.

Can my water feature get damaged during the winter?

    WP Law - Thursday, December 17, 2015
    Water Feature

Without the proper preparation outdoor water features can become damaged during below freezing winter temperatures. To avoid damaging your water feature, you must remove all water from the pipes and actual water feature. It is also recommended that you move your water feature indoors to reduce freezing temperature wear and tear.

    Water Feature Winterization Tips

Whenever it is easily possible, you should put your outdoor fountain in a garage, shed, or other indoor space. If, however, you can't place your water feature indoors, then you should use the following simple tactics to winterize your water feature or fountain. By being proactive, you can keep your fountain safe throughout the entire winter.

    • Before the temperatures drop below freezing you should drain all of the water from your fountain or water feature. If water is left in the water feature then it could freeze during the winter, which could cause extensive damage to your water feature.
    • Remove the pump and store it indoors. Be sure to clean the pump and remove any debris, algae, and dirt.
    • If you can't place your fountain indoors, then you should make sure to cover it with a tarp or other protective, waterproof covering. The protective covering will keep moisture out of your fountain, while also protecting it from snow, sleet, ice, and other winter weather.
    • Water feature openings, including pipe connections, should be insulated to provide further protection against the harsh winter elements. Insulating foam and tape can and should be used to protect the openings from collecting debris or moisture over the winter.

By following these simple steps you can safely winterize your water features, so that they last for many years! To learn more about winterizing your water features, be sure to contact the experts at W.P. Law Inc. Since 1970, W.P. What do I need to install a pondless water feature?

    WP Law - Thursday, October 15, 2015
    Newly Installed Pondless Water Feature

The pondless water feature is the must-have outdoor home accessory that you never knew you needed ... until today! These unique waterscape systems can be constructed using a combination of a stream, rocks, gravel, waterfall, and aquatic plants. Together the latter items are positioned to create a beautiful water feature, without having to install a pond or create a home for fish.

Characteristics of a Pondless Water Features

The disappearing or pondless waterfall allows water to remain at the same level of the rock and gravel fill. Since the water never rises above the rocks and gravel, it gives the appearance that both the waterfall and the stream are disappearing. In reality, the water is securely captured in a hidden underground basin. The underground basin houses the pump equipment and is also lined or filled with rock and gravel. The water is then circulated via a concealed submersible pump. It journeys through an underground pipe up to the waterfall, down the stream, and straight back to the pondless waterfall basin to provide you with countless hours of enjoyment.

Benefits of a Pondless Water Feature

There are a number of benefits to installing a pondless water feature in the back or front yard of your home.

    • Pondless water features are virtually maintenance-free.
    • The water feature runs on a timer and can be set to auto-fill, so that evaporated water is automatically replaced.
    • Residents can enjoy the benefits of a water feature, without having to maintain an entire ecosystem.
    • Pond water features can have a tendency to overflow, while the pondless feature only allows for a minimal amount of water.
    • Improve the beauty of your outdoor lawn spaces.
    • Create a serene and calming space that can be enjoyed throughout the year in above-freezing temperatures.
    • Enhance the curb appeal of your home with a pondless water feature and additional outdoor lighting structures.

How can I cut down on the algae in my pond?

    WP Law - Thursday, August 20, 2015

Find out how to clear your pond.

    algae covered pond

Algae is one of the most common concerns of pond owners. It can develop quickly, spreading across new ponds that are in the process of becoming established. Sometimes it takes the form of green water; other times, it comes in the form of unattractive blanket weed or string algae.

    What Causes Algae in Ponds?

Sometimes algae will collect because rainwater flows across the yard before entering the pond; this water may contain fertilizers that can make algae grow. In other cases, a buildup of organic debris will feed algae, causing large algae blooms. Ponds that are built using marble, concrete, or limestone have a higher pH, which can contribute to algal blooms. A pump that isn't strong enough to move at least half the total pond volume will provide poor circulation, which can also contribute to buildup.

As a new pond becomes established and other issues are addressed, the pond will generally produce less algae over time. But, pond owners will most likely want to address the algae that is already there, to improve pond conditions in the meantime.

    Removing Algae from the Pond

If manually removing algae with a pond skimmer is not feasible, algaecide can help remove algae and restore your pond's aesthetic appeal. Which algaecide will be best will depend on the conditions and use of your pond. In most cases, a copper-based algaecide is appropriate. It is safe to use with most types of fish.

However, if you keep trout, koi, or channel catfish, you will need to get a compatible algaecide for those fish. When treating a pond that has fish, treat one quarter of the pond at a time. When algae dies, the oxygen level around it temporarily dips. By treating the pond in stages, you can assure that your fish have adequate oxygen.

It can take time to get a new pond established and to address all of the issues that cause algae to build up in your pond. But, by addressing issues as they happen and correcting the causes, you can keep your pond attractive and enjoyable all season long.

What is involved in installing a built in grill?

    WP Law - Thursday, June 18, 2015

Ready to enjoy some outdoor cooking? Let's talk about installing a built in grill for your outdoor kitchen, patio or deck:

    Outdoor Kitchen

Baby, it's beautiful outside and that means it's time to take your cooking tasks outdoors to enjoy the beautiful weather. But if you don't have an outdoor kitchen set up or are considering installing a built in grill, it's easy to wonder about what's involved in such a project. In this piece, we'll discuss what you'll need to do to install a built in grill for your outdoor kitchen.

Pick a Location and Choose a Grill

The first step in installing your grill is to decide where you want to put it. You'll want to select a location that is convenient to your kitchen, outdoor dining area or other logical location so you're not spending all your time moving things back and forth. If you're installing a built in grill as part of a new outdoor kitchen, you'll want to keep things close to your existing services, such as plumbing, gas lines, electrical lines or drainage.

Your next step is to figure out which grill will best meet your needs. Do you entertain a lot of people on a regular basis or is your scene cooking intimate dinners for two to enjoy under the stars? Do you like to use smoking chips over charcoal or are you busy and like the ease of firing up a gas grill? By taking into account what your needs are, you'll be able to better select a grill that will work for you.

Plan Your Installation and Install Your Grill

The next things you should look at is how you're going to incorporate the grill into your home's outdoor functionality. Things you'll want to keep in mind in planning your installation include how easy it is to clean the surrounding material, how well it will stand up to heat and how well it will match your home's outdoor materials and surroundings. Don't forget to take into account whether it's protected from bad weather and what's involved in getting utilities to the location. Once you've planned your installation, walk through it in your head and see if there are any problem areas that need to be addressed.

    Enjoy Your Grill!

Now that you've got your grill installed, it's time to enjoy! Spend an evening out enjoying your upgrade. If you need any assistance throughout the process, turn to the experts at W.P. Law, Inc. We are here to help you plan for and install the perfect built in grill for your home.

Can I adjust the flow of my water fountain?

    WP Law - Thursday, May 21, 2015

Everything you need to know about improving the function of your fountain.

    Water Fountain

If the flow on your water fountain "leaves much to be desired," there are several things that could be going wrong. Your pump might not be working correctly, the fountain nozzles might have a blockage, or a build-up of debris might have occurred over the intake screen. To help you adjust the flow of your fountain, we have gathered together a few problematic scenarios, as well as possible fixes.

Top Ways to Adjust the Flow of Fountains:

Scenario 1: Your fountain is not pumping water well.

When a fountain makes a spitting noise, combined with the inability to pump water correctly, it is usually due to insufficient amounts of water. As a general rule of thumb, your indoor or outdoor fountain needs to have enough water to cover the entire pump. If your pump is sufficiently covered, there is a chance that the pump could be clogged or dirty. Thoroughly clean the pump and conduct any necessary repairs by using a pump repair kit.

Scenario 2: Your water fountain has a loud pump.

Loud pumps can be caused by a number of items, including:

    • The water level is too low.
    • You have trash or other debris in your pump.
    • The pump may not be positioned properly, which causes it to vibrate loudly.

If the water level is too low, simply add water until your pump is submerged under of 6 inches of water. Trash or other debris should be removed by disassembling and thoroughly cleaning the pump. If you notice that the pump is vibrating loudly, make sure it is secured properly. Sometime excessive vibration can be a symptom of other problems and may require calling a professional for their expert opinion and help.

Scenario 3: The water flow is too slow or the pattern is irregular.

When a fountain flows irregularly, it is usually due to clogged nozzles or improper the improper setting of flow control valves. Fountain nozzles can usually be cleaned, although time consuming, it is typically an easy fix. Most water fountains will be equipped with an adjustable flow valve; as such, try adjusting the settings to accommodate for your desired flow-level. If this tactic doesn't work, you might need to clean the fountain pump of any debris or build-up. Using a pump repair kit will help you to clean and fix the pump so that it improves the fountain's flow. Additionally, you might need to install a different flow valve, so that the water levels can be regulated more effectively.

    Contacting The Water Fountain Experts

Are you still having a hard time adjusting the flow of your water fountain? Perhaps your specific scenario wasn't listed above? Not a problem, simply contact the experts at W.P. Law Incorporated. Our team of professionals will help you to address your specific water fountain issue. Whether you need to purchase a pump repair kit or install a new pump flow valve, we are here to help.

Why is my water feature making a spitting sound?

    WP Law - Thursday, January 29, 2015

Possible causes for a common water feature problem.

    Water Feature having problems functioning

Outdoor water fixtures can be beautiful decorations for the home, helping to make the backyard feel welcoming. When those fixtures fail to work properly, such as by making a "spitting" sound when running, it can be disappointing and frustrating. We understand that customers want to keep their water fixtures running smoothly, but if they aren't, here are a few possible causes for your fixture's odd noises:

    Sucking up air

The most common reason for the feature to be making a "spitting" noise is that the pump is sucking up air as well as water. It is the air running through the system that causes the odd sound and the spray pattern. You then need to carefully evaluate the following two potential causes of the pump sucking up air:

    • The water supply has gotten too low
    • The pipe or pump has a crack in it

Both of these possible causes should be carefully investigated.

It is possible that the available water has simply gotten below the pump's level. This results in the pump bringing up some of the air while it also tries to pump up the water. If this is the cause, then you need to replenish your water supply to correct it. You should note that some custom fountains require their pipes to be primed before it can be turned back on. You should always verify with us the proper care for your outdoor water fixture before attempting repairs.

Cracks in the pipe or pump

Air can also get into the pump through a crack in the pipe or pump. This can occur for a variety of reasons, although ice in the winter is a possible culprit. We generally recommend that our customers prepare for winter by completely draining outdoor water fixtures and covering them before any freezing temperatures. This will prevent the ice from causing damage. Without draining the fixture, the water can freeze within the pipes and cause blockages and cracks.

Poor regular maintenance for the fixture and accidental damage can also cause cracks and related problems. If your pipes have been cracked, it is best for professionals to come and determine if they can be repaired or if they need to be replaced.

It is our goal for each of our customers to have beautiful water fixtures that they can enjoy. If your fixture is giving your problems related to spitting water, we recommend that you review the above ideas and see if one of these situations could possibly explain your difficulties. If you have any questions or need a repair, please contact WP Law, Inc for a consultation.

Here's How to Start Planning Your Landscape Lighting

    Landscape Lighting Basics

Here's How to Start Planning Your Landscape Lighting
Landscape lighting enjoys many positive uses. When properly installed, it can add value to your home or it can attract business to a commercial setting. Lighting can be helpful in setting the right mood or atmosphere, as well as providing enough light for practical reasons. For instance, adding lighting to a dark backyard increases safety.

However, because there are several factors to consider when it comes to adding landscape lighting to your home, it helps to have a plan.

    Consider the Effects You Want

What kind of functionality are you looking for? Do you need improved visibility? Would you like to warn visitors of potential dangers around your yard? Is your main concern giving your home an elegant appearance or an inviting glow?

How you plan to use the light is important because the impact of the light is often more important than the style you choose.

Path lights placed to provide subtle pools of light are a great way to provide lighting along a walkway without the runway effect of a straight line of lights. Directional lights are used to highlight specimen trees or shrubs and distinctive architectural features of your home, such as stone walls.

LED’s provide energy savings and allow for more flexibility in system design. LED’s also require less maintenance that incandescent or halogen bulbs.

As you begin to plan, don’t be afraid to think big. Consider your functional needs first, and then consider any changes made through the seasons. This will help you to create the perfect living space and maximize the use of lighting.

The 3 Most Popular Types of Commercial Fountains

    WP Law - Monday, June 16, 2014

Just how versatile are commercial fountains?

The 3 Most Popular Types of Commercial Fountains
Commercial fountains add a sense of beauty and elegance to any business. They come in an endless number of styles, as well, so you don’t have to feel limited to the common “Grecian sculpture and reflective pool” combination.

The following three commercial fountains are some of the more popular options available:

    1. Architectural Fountains

Architectural, artsy fountains combine the esthetic of architecture with the flow of water. Crisp design and functionality meet to help you establish a professional, cutting edge atmosphere.

    2. Floating Fountains

Floating fountains can turn an existing body of water into a magical display of water and light. Depending on the size of the pond or lake, phenomenal displays can be easily created for less cost than many architectural water features.

    3. Water Gardens

Water gardens can be small or quite large in size. These self-contained gardens of water-loving plants mix foliage, flowers, and water in a soothing and beautiful outcome. You can add other living elements too, such as koi fish or small turtles. You’ll inspire a feeling of tranquility, peace and caring into your environment, or of fun-loving creativity if the right decorative pieces come into play.

Commercial fountains stand out because they’re beautiful and unique. The styles mentioned above are a small sample of some of the best types used in businesses.

How the Right Commercial Fountains Can Improve Your Curb Appeal

    WP Law - Thursday, June 12, 2014

The Impact of Commercial Fountains Really Packs a Punch

How the Right Commercial Fountains Can Improve Your Curb Appeal
Commercial fountains welcome people to your business and reinforce your brand and professionalism with the right design. If you want to draw new traffic into your business, consider one of these unique water features to your exterior’s layout.

How Do You Pick the Right Fountain?

Focus on how your landscape, building’s exterior, the fountain, and your business message can work together. Every element of your marketing, branding, and physical presence can cooperate to attract more of your ideal clients. The right feature design can help make this change obvious to your clients before they step through your doors.

    What Does a Fountain Do?

Water features like fountains are a great source of relaxation. They’re known to help soothe stress. They’re also excellent ways to create white noise, allowing customers to escape the clatter of the street. Water is also very attractive to most people, providing a sense of nature and calm to any situation.

Businesses can take advantage of the power of water and the attraction of fountains. Health facilities, such as hospitals, chiropractic and therapeutic offices, and centers for psychiatric care, can attract visitors with the use of a fountain. Not only are they a beacon of calm, but they give off the impression of success.

It is not just the fountain, however, that businesses have at their disposal. The setting for your water feature can have just as big of an impact. Consider a tropical beach scene or an elegant marble foyer. What kind of impression would these give your patrons?

One very effective example of fountain use can be seen in restaurants where they’re used to distract people waiting for tables. Paired with a small pool and a handful of pennies, you can provide guests with a wishing well and wind up with surprisingly fun entertainment as well as a good impression.

How Low Can Landscape Lighting Go?

Landscape Lighting Adds Depth and Drama

How Low Can Landscape Lighting Go?
Landscape lighting is an amazingly versatile tool you can use to add drama to your landscape. Many different types of lighting systems are available, including those used to create dramatic underwater displays.

In terms of voltage, low voltage systems are safe and easy to install and they add subtle drama and beauty to a nighttime setting. A low voltage lighting system can provide dramatic effect or draw attention to particular features in your landscape.

Landscape lighting can also be an extension of your home or business, used to maintain the same style inside and outside. When you take the time to focus on improving the appearance of your property in this way, you’ll experience a big boost in curb appeal and in value-of-use.

Business owners benefit, too. For instance, a restaurant with an outdoor patio can draw in a new caliber of clientele with the help of low-voltage lighting. The atmosphere creates intimacy and allows patrons to enjoy the night outside during a wonderful meal.

Use landscape lighting to put a special touch on your outdoor spaces. Sure, there are the other benefits, but the creative use of space and the atmosphere you can create take center stage. To explore the full options of what lighting can do for your home or business, contact us today.

Residential Fountains Offer Moments of Peace

The 2 Most Soothing Types of Residential Fountains

When thinking of the human body and our senses, the ideas of sight, touch, and sound come to mind. If we apply those senses to a residential fountain, the fountain becomes an enveloping experience capable of transforming a chaotic environment into a truly relaxing escape.

    1. Sight

Residential fountains have the ability to take design elements and tie them together into a cohesive vision. They also have the power to impact those who experience them.

Add-ons such as nozzles help to direct water sprays. Submersible lights can enhance atmosphere, too. How the water falls is also another way that the visual element can be enhanced. Whether you want it to spray upward and outward or to trickle over a statue or design piece, you can make the water a beautiful part of the fountain’s visual style.

    1. Sound

Sound can be soothing just on its own, or you can also use it as a tool. The sound of falling water can be used to block out intrusive noise pollution like traffic. Sound can also help with relaxation.

An example of this would be when residential fountains are placed near a meditation area or when the art of Yoga is practiced near water. Both scenarios allow you to enter deeper into a relaxed zone and experience a deeper and more rewarding experience.

Those are just a handful of ways water can increase the tranquility of any space. To learn more about what you can do with a fountain for your home, contact us at WP Law, Inc.

How to Upgrade Your BBQ Season with Outdoor Grills and Kitchens

    WP Law - Thursday, April 17, 2014

Outdoor Grills and Kitchens Add Value to Your Home All Year Long

How to Upgrade Your BBQ Season with Outdoor Grills and Kitchens

Spring and summer are the primary grilling seasons, but well-designed outdoor grills and kitchens can be functional all year long. An outdoor grill can be used year round, especially when you incorporate seasonal change into its design. You can overcome the elemental factors through layout if you plan for them.

Get out of the kitchen and into your outdoor living space.

An outdoor kitchen with a roof, like an open beam gazebo or even solid roof pergola, can help keep out the rain. A fire pit can provide warmth, as will a grill or even an oven. If you enjoy the outdoors, a full kitchen is a must.

From drop-in coolers and refrigerating units to grills that do double-duty and offer baking functionality, you don’t have to make any sacrifices to cook outdoors. The summer BBQ season can begin a lot earlier for many areas around the country.

An outdoor kitchen gives you the opportunity to get out of the kitchen and into the outdoors. There is no reason people need to work all day and then come home to hang out inside for the rest of the day. With a little forethought, dinner can be cooking right alongside you while you relax.

    Outdoor Grills and Kitchens

There are so many choices when it comes to grills, stoves, ovens, and even refrigerators that are designed for the outdoor kitchen. Today's designs are more than just a Weber BBQ on the deck. Outdoor kitchens are elegant, sophisticated, and comfortable.

For instance, a side burner allows you to make the sides needed to round out a grilled porterhouse or halibut fillet. Warming drawers keep those sides warm until you’re ready to eat, and once dinner is served, the perfect soda or beer can be pulled out of your cooler drawer. Explore the idea of an outdoor living space with a full kitchen today.

The 2 Best Residential Fountain Ideas

    WP Law - Thursday, April 10, 2014

The best residential fountain ideas are usually the ones you create yourself.

The 2 Best Residential Fountain Ideas

While most of us would agree that fountains are a beautiful addition to any yard or garden, we may be hesitant to get one for ourselves because we think it’s such an involved or complicated project. Actually, you can get a quite simple fountain for your home and still enjoy its beauty and serenity.

How is this so? For one, residential fountains require a minimal amount of parts. These required parts include:

    • Pump

    • Reservoir

    • Power Source

    • Water delivery tube

    • Screen to keep debris out of the reservoir

Given the simplicity of this list, a simple residential fountain that doesn’t require much handy work or maintenance is very doable. All you need to add to this list is your imagination. Here are the two best ideas for those who want a fountain with simple construction:

    1. The Spilling Fountain and Flower Container

Fountains do not need to be large. You can create a small fountain as part of a larger flower pot, or you can incorporate a flower pot into a fountain. Water gardens are also an option, especially if you have a really beautiful pot. A good tip is to make sure your water reservoir is large enough to go several days to a week without needing more water.

    1. DIY Kits

DIY kits are perfect for residential fountains because of variety and ease, though they don’t offer the same challenge of making a fountain from scratch. However, that’s also your biggest benefit. The beauty of these kits is that you have everything you need in one box.

You can still add in your imagination and customize a DIY fountain kit. You can use a fountain to enhance any outdoor living area. A good tip for all fountains is to add the maintenance to your yard care crew’s to-do-list. Larger fountains usually require less maintenance and smaller fountains usually require topping off more often. Strike a balance in labor by choosing the perfect sized fountain for your existing landscape design.

3 Ways Residential Fountains Can Make You the Cool Kid on the Block

    WP Law - Monday, December 30, 2013

Create an Everyday Escape for Friends and Neighbors Using Residential Fountains

3 Ways Residential Fountains Can Make You the Cool Kid on the Block

Residential fountains provide homeowners with a surprising number of benefits, but homeowners aren't the only ones who count. Guests and neighbors can get just as much from your water projects. Invest in the right features and enjoy the following results:

    1. People Appreciate Your Investment

Whether you're creating large gardens or shoveling snow for the whole block, your neighbors appreciate when you invest in their community. They especially enjoy features that help raise property value. Building a fountain makes your home look special, but it's also a draw to the neighborhood.

    2. People Will Start Talking About Your Home

"Have you seen the Murphys’ fountain yet?" No one is going to stop by your home to see your fountain without stopping in to see you. This gives you a chance to invite them in and make a new first impression with people you haven't bonded with before. As more people visit your home and spread the word, more people will feel comfortable doing the same. Adding a fountain to your outdoor design is a good way to make new friends in your area.

    3. A Successful Design Makes you a Resource

Landscaping projects can be labor and cost intensive. Providing the neighborhood with a stellar example of how to do things right makes you to go-to homeowner on the block. People will want to know who you used for your project, why and how you made your project work. Community experts get more respect and often find they have more influence.

3 Ways Commercial Fountains are Completely Underrated

    WP Law - Thursday, December 26, 2013

Don't Ignore the True Benefits of Commercial Fountains

3 Ways Commercial Fountains are Completely Underrated

Commercial fountains aren't just pretty to look at. Designed correctly, they can have a significant impact on your bottom line. Consider these following points when deciding whether or not to include a fountain or other water feature into your company plans.

    1. Fountains Draw Attention

There's a reason the Bellagio Hotel is so well-known. Although it's an amazing hotel overflowing with luxury, it stands out in Las Vegas because of its fountain system. It's big, brash, and dances in awe-inspiring displays. Thousands of visitors come to see the Bellagio Fountains, even if they don't stay in the hotel. While people visit, however, they often notice other things happening on the property they wouldn't have discovered otherwise. The significant impact of the hotel's water feature encouraged mall developer Emaar Properties to create a $218 million fountain display to open alongside their Dubai shopping complex.

    2. They Also Create Good PR

Award-winning fountains draw a different kind of attention. The media covers stories about where these structures are built, who was hired for the design, how much the project cost, and why they stood out from other water features. Your company name appears in press releases and on websites, and its picture can be seen in magazines and online. These are all great for exposure. People who haven't heard of you before will, and they'll associate your business with good investments. That's important for attracting quality clients and partners, as well as reinforcing a good brand reputation for the purpose of hiring.

    3. They Boost Your Website Optimization

When your name and often your company's domain name appear frequently online as your fountain draws attention, it gives your importance in search results a surprising boost. You'll wind up with high quality backlinks leading to your site and search engines will identify your URL as a quality resource. These traits all effect how high your website performs in search results, whether or not someone is searching for information on fountains or design.

Creating Your Own Kind of Beautiful with DIY Fountains

How DIY Fountains Can Make You Happy

DIY fountains offer surprising benefits for the home and business owners who plan and build them. Before tossing the chance aside, really look into what it takes to create your own water features. You may be very surprised at how simple it is and how satisfied with the final product.

People Love to Do Good Deeds

Living in our often materialistic world, it's hard to believe this human truth; the happiest people focus on doing for others more than filling their own needs. People get big rewards from living altruistically. DIY fountains add enjoyment, beauty, and charm to previously drab or worn spaces. Your project won't only help you appreciate your property more. It will help you feel responsible for adding some beauty to the world.

    People Love Feeling Competent

There's something to be said for a job well done, especially when you learn new skills in the process. Designing and constructing your own fountain will add to the list of things you like about you. You may not create another one again, or you may turn the new skills you learn into a new source of income.

    Fountains Provide Relaxation and Peace

In life, it's often more about the journey you take than your final destination. Fortunately, for a do-it-yourself fountain or water feature project, the end result provides a serious boost. They often provide calm and relaxation through the comforting sounds of babbling water. They elicit the tranquility of being with nature and help block out the noises of the busier, more complicated world.

Building your own fountain may seem like a complicated endeavor, but the market is full of products to help you on your way. It's easier than it looks, by far, and provides a surprising number of benefits.

Who Really Uses Outdoor Grills and Kitchens

    WP Law - Thursday, December 19, 2013

Outdoor Grills and Kitchens Maximize Your Property Investments

Who Really Uses Outdoor Grills and Kitchens

Outdoor grills and kitchens can be found in residential and commercial settings. They make sense for families who enjoy entertaining outdoors, and they add a unique touch to businesses serving food or hosting banquets.

The question is really whether they're right for you. Here are several questions you can ask yourself:

Do you have the outdoor space for a built-in grill?

One of the smallest built-in models available is the BI Pro 500RB from Napoleon Gourmet Grills. It's 30 3/4-inches long and 20 5/8-inches deep, but still enjoys 760-sq. inches of cooking space. You may also want to add additional features such as an outdoor refrigerator, wine chiller or kegerator. The built-in amenities have their own space requirements. With such a wide variety of outdoor kitchen options, there is something for almost any size outdoor area. An outdoor kitchen area will improve your ability to use the property as well as its value.

Do you have the kind of property needed to enjoy outdoor cooking?

Most people live or own a business in an area safe for enjoying outdoors. Very few situations can't be changed through the use of landscaping and greenery to make guests feel safe and comfortable. The one exception might be an industrial location where smells or noise are a nuisance. Barring those situations, you can work with a designer to create an escape where friends and clients come to get away from the daily grind. Outdoor grills and kitchens add to the appeal, and for the right businesses, create potential for a secondary income.

    What about your neighbors' feelings?

Entertaining outdoors can create noise and it's important to consider how your neighbors might feel about this kind of change. Before you go to the expense of installing an outdoor cooking area, you may want to tryout a portable grill or at least talk with a few of them about their schedules. If the guy next door works nights and sleeps all day, having parties every weekend will quickly lead to problems. This is especially true for businesses. Make sure your area is zoned correctly and secure any permits you'll need before you invest in the process.

For most homeowners, adding an outdoor kitchen or grill allows you to enjoy more of your property more of the time, and to be more social in your time outside of work. They add value to your home and make life more fun too. Likewise, businesses can increase their reputations and their profits. It's important to do your due diligence, but don't let the what-if's rob you of the experience.

How Water Features are Easier Than You Think

    WP Law - Monday, December 16, 2013

Plan Water Features to be Cool and Easy to Clean

How Water Features are Easier Than You Think

People get confused when it comes to water features. They assume if it's beautiful, it must be expensive and difficult to take care of. This couldn't be a bigger misconception. A quality fountain design and installation takes maintenance into account and incorporates products and technology to make maintaining that masterpiece easier.

    Filtration

Maintaining water quality is the most important element in reducing maintenance headaches and costs. Poor water quality leads to murky water, clogged nozzles and foul odors. A reputable fountain contractor will insist on using some type of filtration. In many cases filtration will be used in conjunction with other water quality processes such as UV lights.

    Automation

Setting various features of your fountain on a schedule or allowing them to be controlled offsite by computer or mobile device helps you maintain the ideal standards for your water features, regardless of your other obligations. Save money on labor and still make sure your fountains stay in tip-top shape.

    Environmentally Friendly

Water-conserving fountains sound like an oxymoron, but designs can easily be tweaked to either use less water or recycle and filter water so visitors enjoy an impressive display while your utility bills stay low.

    Easy Drainage

One of the most important points of maintenance in cold weather areas is the ability to fully drain a fountain before it freezes. The design company you work with can install special equipment and make this job easier and more thorough, preventing frozen feature elements that can lead to excessive damage.

    Show Stopping Commercial Fountains

The 3 Best Commercial Fountains in History

Outstanding commercial fountains get recognized each year at tradeshows in a number of industries. Pool and spa associations and landscaping groups in particular pay attention to these fun and inspiring water features. Award winners can tell you a lot about current trends and innovations. However, taking a look at some of the most famous commercial fountains in history can also give you a starting point.

    1. Bellagio Fountains

The fountains in Las Vegas have more flare than any others in the world. Along the Strip, none impress visitors more than the Bellagio Fountains. Like the chorus girl routines performed nightly indoors, the fountains dips and drips are colored and professionally choreographed to thrilling music in order to keep guests enthralled. The waterworks feature over 1000 devices and create sprays reaching over 450-ft. in the air.

    2. Fountain of Wealth

Found underground in Suntec City's shopping complex, this Singapore curiosity remains one of the largest commercial fountains in the world. Its bronze shape includes an inner circle supported by five towering beams, and makes a show stopping centerpiece.

    3. Dubai Fountain

Contrary to popular opinion, the Dubai Fountain is not, in fact, a public project. It was financed by Emaar Properties to coincide with the opening of the Dubai Mall. Designed by the same company responsible for the Bellagio Fountains, it's 25 percent larger. Featuring 6,600 lights and shooting water nearly 500-ft. into the air, the choreographed fountain celebrates a variety of popular and traditional Arabian tunes. Finished in 2009, it cost just $218 million.

How Landscape Lighting Can Make or Break Your Landscape Design

    WP Law - Thursday, November 28, 2013

Landscape Lighting Accentuates Your Outdoor Spaces

How Landscape Lighting Can Make or Break Your Landscape Design

Landscape lighting accents the spaces you create outdoors, adding a depth that improves their value for little money. Landscaping is not just about where you place plants or garden structures. It's about finding a balance between hard and soft, and light and dark. Landscape lighting picks up where natural lighting leaves off in design and aesthetics.

Lighting can also be used to add dimensions and texture to your outdoor design. The degree in which light is displayed can be soft or harsh, just as the use of lights to outline a path can create a formal or whimsical look. Unfortunately, poorly used lighting can also work against your plans. Nothing breaks up a pleasant evening like a huge glaring light that is shining in your eyes.

Using lighting in landscape design takes some practice, but the results can be amazing. We spend thousands of dollars each year going on vacations, but we could invest a fraction of the expense into landscaping and create vacation spots right in our own backyards. Space is about usage, so how can lighting improve the use of your yard?

Imagine little sitting corners where you can read and relax. Imagine designing a romantic spot where you and a significant other can sit and talk, laugh, and enjoy each other's company. Consider creating nooks in your garden that offer the glow of candlelight, or use lights to safely line a path to your home.

Landscape lighting is amazing and versatile. It adds emotion to a setting, and lets you direct how the ambiance unfolds. If you would like more information about how outdoor lighting can make or break your landscape design, then contact us online today.

Residential Fountains add Fun and Elegance to your Home

    Creating Show Stopping Residential Fountains

For being such simple features, residential fountains make a big impression. Who knew pumping water from a reservoir and letting it cascade down a surface would have the power to be so mesmerizing? Options are endless and can be worked into any décor style. The brilliance of fountains is both the versatility in design and the elementary equipment that go into each of these works of fluid art.

Available components work together to create elements that are vertical and horizontal, light and dark, colorful, and even include sound. They have the ability to draw you into a space, and because of that make a popular addition to any meeting space in or near your home. Best yet, the function of the space can be customized by your fountain.

If you want to create a mood that is soft, then let cascading water break on another object before it hits pooled water. If you want to create a space that shuts out noise, than increase the volume of falling water and let it break directly on the pool's surface. You can create the impression of both night and day by adding in lights. Switch up your fountain during holidays by swapping out colored lights for standard white bulbs.

Kits for making residential fountains can help this process along, or you can look to experts. W. P. Law, Inc. is here to help you with that creative process. Contact us today and let us answer your questions and give you some suggestions for your next project.

3 Problems To Avoid When Installing DIY Fountains
DIY fountains can be a lot of fun and help to add a personal touch to areas in and around your home. When working on a DIY fountain or water feature project, here are a few things to avoid.

    1. Wrong Pump Size: Pumps are rated in terms of flow rate, usually measured in gallons per minute (GPM) although sometimes gallons per hour (GPH) is used, and pressure which is usually measured in PSI or Feet of Head. In a typical fountain application, a pump that provides a high flow rate at a lower pressure is used. It is important to know the elevation from where the pump will be pumping the water from to the highest discharge point on the water feature. If this information is not accurate, the pump can be sized improperly. A pump that does not fit the application properly will cause problems for the owner down the road. In addition to using more power an improperly sized pump will cause the water feature to give a less than desirable “show”.

    2. Instability: Water is heavy. Make sure that your structure is on a level surface, that the surface can support your structure and the weight of the water, and that the structure is assembled securely.

    3. Leakage: Flexible liners work really well for helping to prevent leakage. Choose a liner that is UV protected so that it maintains its strength for at least several years. Think about splash as well. Fountains can splash, and indoors that means that the surrounding areas can become damp or spotted by water.

Explore these tips for a pondless residential fountain to enhance your outdoor living space.

Incorporating a Pondless Water System Into Residential Fountains
Pondless water features are amazing additions to any residential landscape because they add a great deal of depth and charm to a space.

Incorporating a pondless water feature into a residential landscape is fairly easy, especially for the DIY kind of designer. Pondless water features can be tucked away in the corner of your landscape to provide a quiet place to reflect or sit down with a good book. Pondless water features can also be the dramatic focal point of the backyard landscape.

There are many pondless water feature kits, most of which can be completed in a weekend. Because pondless water features are “pondless” there is no open, standing body of water that must be maintained. Pondless water features are also safer due to the lack of a pool, so even families with small children can enjoy a backyard water feature without worrying.

The Many Benefits of Backyard Residential Fountains

4 Ways Residential Fountains Will Create a Garden Oasis In Your Backyard

Residential fountains are extensions of our own senses. They enhance our experiences, bring beauty and serenity to a private space, and they help to block out other noise.

    1. Sight:
A well designed residential fountain is beautiful and enjoying to look at as you relax in your yard. Fountains can help to tie landscape design elements together, and they offer a focal point that should be central to your backyard.

    2. Sound:
The sound of water is relaxing. It is used in many forms of meditation. It is also a white noise, which means that it helps to block out traffic, and noise from our daily lives. The sound of water is itself a vessel that can let your mind be free.

    3. Themes:
With a backyard fountain, you can design a habitat that allows water friendly plants to grow. A small pond or even container pond can produce beautiful lilies, iris, and other blooming plants that add to the beauty and enjoyment of outdoor living spaces.

    4. DIY vs Packaged:
Design is also a useful tool that fountains can help you deliver. A concept or a theme can be enhanced with the use of specific types of fountains that can be packaged or even designed by you. The mechanical function of a fountain is so simple that you can design theme based fountains fairly easily. Even everyday items can be converted into a fountain. The versatility of fountains is almost unlimited.

The Know-How You Need to Become the MacGyver of DIY Fountains

    WP Law - Monday, August 26, 2013

DIY fountains might seem complicated or difficult, but the reality is that they are very simple to create.

    DIY Fountains

The first trick in working with DIY fountains is to understand how fountains work. Once you understand how the pieces all connect together, and the basic philosophy of how they work, you will be able to fix, create, and design your own fountains.

    DIY Fountains

Fountains are made up of five parts:
    • the reserve to hold the water,
    • the pump to push the water,
    • the line that delivers the water to the top of the fountain,
    • the screen to keep stuff out of the filter, and
    • the fountain.

As long as the fountain is stable, you can change and improve how the water is delivered to the top.

The second trick of most fountains is to understand which pump you need. Most fountains work off of submersible pumps; the problem is finding a pump that will push water to the elevation of fountain.

The next big problem is figuring out how much (volume) water you need the pump to deliver to the elevation (height) of your fountain. Most pumps have a grid chart on the back that will show you how much volume the pump will move to different heights. If the fountain is three feet tall, and you need 3 gallons of water pumped per minute (GPM), then you can look on the back of the pump box and see if that pump is the right one for your project.

If you are creative, then the third trick is to use a flexible line/hose as a conduit for water. These are the secrets to becoming a MacGyver of residential fountains.

Need some expert advice on choosing, building, and maintaining DIY fountains? Just ask.

Why Pondless Water Systems Make Great Residential Fountains

    WP Law - Thursday, August 15, 2013

Here’s an excellent choice as you consider residential fountains.

    Pondless Water Systems

As you start your search for the perfect residential fountain, you might find inspiration in a surprising place: geology. There is a term for a naturally occurring water feature called a disappearing river, and they work in one of the most amazing ways. The water runs along like a normal river and then just disappears into the ground. They may reappear at some distance, but the effect is dramatic. That same technique is being used in to create disappearing waterfalls and water features in backyards all across America.

The disappearing waterfall or river in the natural setting actually drops down into a sunken reservoir and then travels along an underground aquifer until it reappears, usually as a waterfall. Well, it is not secret that most of us do not have the space for all of that, which is why we take those basic concepts of nature and apply them to the technology of residential fountains.

What is residential fountain technology? It is the very basic concept of the natural disappearing river. It is a basic reservoir, a pump, and a line. Water is pumped from the reservoir, up the line, and reemerges as a waterfall. The water then cascades down the water feature (waterfall or fountain) and then disappears into the reservoir where it begins the cycle again.

What we have just described are pondless water systems. The benefit of using pondless water systems to create water features and residential fountains is that they come with all the parts and supplies, sometimes even the plants, necessary to create a waterfall or a river. They are easy to install, affordable, and you can easily attach your creative side to these projects.

If you have questions about pondless water systems and other residential fountains, just ask the pros at WP Law.

2 New Ideas for Creating and Building Your Own Residential Fountains

    WP Law - Thursday, August 08, 2013

Be creative in choosing your residential fountains features.

Residential fountains are about more than just moving water. They can easily take on all sorts of dimensions. Recently, we saw a Homeowners / DIY residential fountain that was created out of several galvanized containers that were attached using a metal pole.

The containers were arranged as follows: the first was flat, the second was tilted, and the third was actually an old watering can, which emptied water into the second. The second container then spilled into the third. The amazing part was that the three containers were filled with flowers. They contained a simple mixture of petunias, but the effect was stunning.

The project consisted of a pump, a reservoir, and the containers. The artist, for that is surely what whoever was who created this feature was, just used their imagination to create a piece of art that was also a water fountain. A great DIY project.

The second idea is to use your residential fountain to add to your outdoor living space. We've all seen the statuary with water emerging from various body parts, but what if we told you that you could create a centerpiece that nobody had seen before? You could combine plants and brick to create something that is both modern and ancient.

By using flexible pond liners or a deep tube contain you can stack the bricks to make a square around the container. You then alternate the bricks to create spaces and gaps between the bricks. In these spaces, you plant moss. The water travels up the container and spills over the outside of the bricks. Changing the upper bricks can create a waterfall, or splash zones. On the top of the feature, you place a flower pot with hanging plants. The effect is stunning, and in no time the creation takes on the look of an ancient artifact.

Have a DIY project with residential fountains brewing in your imagination? Contact us with your questions about how to make it spectacular.

2 Things You Never Knew You Needed to Know About Water Feature Pumps

    WP Law - Monday, August 05, 2013

Two facts that may change how you think about water feature pumps.

    Water Feature Pumps

As straightforward as water feature pumps may seem, they can still hold some surprises. Whether there are new technological innovations that make the pumps more efficient or there are tips for getting the most out of your water pumps, there is always more to discover.

Here are two things that you might not have heard about water feature pumps:

    1. You can use solar power. Perhaps one of the best things developed recently is cheaper solar power for water pumps. Being able to reduce the outflow of cash helps your bottom line. Solar power systems offer free energy, and the increase in solar technology has made these systems affordable.

What makes these systems beneficial to the end user? In short, there is no need for a generator. You save on energy and fuel costs needed to run the water pump, and you can install these where traditional electricity is absent.

    2. Water pumps have a peak flow. While the box may say they produce X number of GPH, or PSI, there is always a tradeoff in the real world. If your pump box says that the pump will push 300 gallons per hour, it will, but only under ideal circumstances. If your pump box says it will produce 50 PSI, it will, but not when it is pumping 300 gallons per hour. There is a peak where the two flow rates meet, and that peak is affected by things like uplift, distance, and even temperature. It pays in the long-run really to consider how the pump in your water feature will be used before you choose a model.

As always, we are very happy to help you find the perfect pump for your needs. Just let us know what your water feature questions are, and we will be happy to help you find answers for them.

A Beginner’s Guide to Outdoor Grills and Kitchens

    WP Law - Thursday, July 25, 2013

Nothing says summer fun better than firing up an outdoor grill and kitchen.

A Beginner’s Guide to Outdoor Grills and Kitchens
What’s better than a group of friends coming together in an outdoor space and sharing food, drinks, and good conversation? It’s the simple things like this that make outdoor living such an important investment.

Making your space truly inhabitable with an outdoor grill or kitchen is a great way to complete the scene. But how do you know if it’s a worthwhile investment for you?

Outdoor grills and kitchens can range from the expensive to the affordable. The technology available today is a far cry from the basic freestanding grill of cookouts gone by. Not only do you have the opportunity to cook outside, you have the chance to create a dining experience in your backyard. But make sure you choose materials that are resilient to the outdoor elements.

First of all, you should consider whether or not you have the space available for this kind of installation. With the amount of heat that grills and kitchens give off, you want to have enough room to avoid discomfort for any guests.

Another important decision is part of the longstanding debate between grillers about gas or electric in comparison to charcoal.

If you’d like to know what some of your options are when it comes to outdoor kitchens and grills, we’ve created a special brochure detailing some of these options.

You can also speak directly with a professional at WP Law about what you’re looking for with your outdoor kitchen or grill and get expert advice about your options.

Illuminating Your Path: Using Landscape Lighting to Define Outdoor Spaces

Landscape lighting to make your outdoor space glow.

Illuminating Your Path: Using Landscape Lighting to Define Outdoor Spaces
So you have spent months perfecting your outdoor space and it’s finally coming together. The first thing you’ll want to do is maximize the time you spend outside with friends and family. But there are only so many hours in a day!

Luckily, you don’t need to worry about that, because landscape lighting can extend the nightlife of your exterior space.

Landscape lighting can be the perfect finishing touch on any exterior space. And there are various lighting options to match what you’re trying to light.

For instance, ground lighting is perfect for low-lying accents. If you have a healthy flower garden, invest in something that will spotlight the work you put into it.

For more impressive focal points like trees or fountains, consider hanging lanterns to soften these features.

It’s good to keep in mind that less is more with landscape lighting. Because of the natural shadows, you can achieve a dramatic look without investing too much in a fancy setup. Mimicking the color of natural light also helps to create a cohesive outdoor scene.

Whether it’s a patio or private garden, shining a light on the outdoor space can make it more accessible and inviting at all hours of the day.

Water features add tranquility to any landscape.

3 Surprising Reasons Water Features Can Enhance Your Life
Water features offer an elegant option for decoration and can introduce a dimension of tranquility into your traditional backyard landscape.

But that’s not all they’re good for. Water has customarily been a great source of stress reduction, and investing in a water feature like fountains or ponds can significantly tip the scales on any landscape.

Stress Relief. Outdoor fountain designs can have a serious impact on your mood. They go a long way to changing an otherwise static environment into a dynamic one. Movement is pleasing to the human eye, which is why we enjoy looking out at the tidal pull of the ocean or standing on the shores of rivers as they flow past us.

Sounds of Nature. Despite most water features incorporating synthetic components like hoses or filters, they can create a very realistic natural setting. The sound of running water combined with a healthy lawn or garden can be the tipping point between backyard and private oasis. Water features are a luxury that cannot be underestimated.

Attracting Wildlife. Most water features have the added bonus of attracting birds into the yard. This means more entertainment and a healthier ecosystem right outside your back door.

Incorporate Grills and Kitchens in Your Outdoor Space

    WP Law - Thursday, June 27, 2013

Outdoor grills and kitchens help you cook up fun weekends.

Incorporate Grills and Kitchens in Your Outdoor Space

Hosting a party can be one of the greatest benefits to having a beautiful outdoor refuge and sharing the atmosphere with friends or family is a great way to celebrate the summer. Kitchen and grilling stations can enhance the functionality of a patio or backyard and change the way you utilize your space.

From mobile stainless steel grills to permanent installations with dish and utensil storage, there are many options that might suit your cooking preferences. Gas, charcoal, and electric grills all have different benefits. One of the biggest deciding factors is flavor. Electric grills are convenient, but they don’t achieve that authentic fire-cooked taste that wood stoves or charcoal grills provide.

Brick ovens and charcoal grills also tend to take up more space than electric. They also hold up better as a long-term investment and can be a better choice for the more dedicated griller. These installations often combine elegance with functionality, and can be more aesthetic than a simple steel gas or electric kitchen station.

It’s important to consider heat production when designing the layout of cooking stations. Be sure to put enough distance between seating and food prep for optimum comfort and cooking efficiency. Outdoor grills and kitchens can compliment fire pits and transition a space seamlessly from one season to the next.

Whatever your preference, the important thing to remember is to eat, drink, and be merry!

Landscape lighting opens a whole new world for your home.

Landscape Lighting to Showcase Your Gardens

Gardens are a personal escape for many people. If you put a lot of work into perfecting a space, you want to show it off all the time. Landscape lighting can be a worthwhile investment if you want to increase visibility and liven up your garden after sundown. Whether it’s a nighttime party or a quiet evening dinner spot, your garden can be transformed by creative landscape lighting.

Design options range from the simple to the elaborate. A lighted pathway through your yard can showcase the landscaping as well as guide visitors safely across uneven terrain. Soft lights pointed toward the ground can be used to reflect and illuminate the boundary lines of garden beds.

If you want a more dramatic affect, concentrate your lighting on a single focal point. For example, low lighting a large tree or fountain can cast great shadows and emphasize the strongest features of your space. Night lighting can also provide additional home security.

One economical option would be to invest in LED lighting. The initial cost is eventually recouped through energy saved and lower maintenance costs. No matter what your budget, there’s a landscape lighting solution that will fit your needs and transform your garden.

Landscape Products – 3 Tips For Summer Improvements

    WP Law - Thursday, June 13, 2013

Which landscape products are hot this summer?

Landscape Products – 3 Tips For Summer Improvements

Summer is the season of backyard BBQs, neighborhood block parties, and spending time with friends and family in the sunshine. You work hard to keep your yard green and healthy all year long, but this is the best time to show it off. Here are a few extra ways to spruce up the backyard with simple landscape products for summer fun.

    • If you have kids, it’s a good idea to keep mosquitos, fire ants and other pests at bay. There are many insecticides that when used properly are safe for family and pets. A natural fertilizer will help reduce weeds and is a gentler option on any barefoot traffic. And keeping the lawn trim will make it easier to install fun summer games like croquet, or maybe even lay out an impromptu picnic.

    • Typical summer lawn height is between 2.5 and 3 inches. This offers protection from the heat of the sun without letting the blades get too tall. After mowing, return the clippings to the yard for extra nutrients.

    • Irrigation is another important factor in summer lawn care. Watering requirements change from season to season. If you rely on an automatic irrigation system or other landscape product, be sure to adjust your settings to a more frequent level.

    WP Law - Monday, April 29, 2013

What are the 5 most popular materials used in residential fountains?

most popular materials used in residential fountains

In addition to the pump, pipes, and fittings needed to move the water, a residential fountain or water feature is going to be made of something that is beautiful to the homeowner. This means there's a choice of waterproof materials used to create your own version of paradise.

Here are five of the most popular materials used in residential fountains:
    • Stone - from a natural jumbled pile to formal elegance
    • Cast stone/resin - this can look like almost anything!
    • Copper in different finishes - if you want it to stay shiny, have it sealed. Otherwise it will develop the patina that many prefer.
    • Ceramic - again, this can be tile or pottery or almost anything.
    • Glass or acrylic - often a sheet that the water flows over, this becomes invisible unless an etching is part of the design.

There's a lot to choose from! How do you decide? Talk to an expert... because a fountain will be a feature of your outdoor living space for a long time.

Bill & Dorothy Law started an irrigation and pumping equipment business in 1970 that has become one of the top distributors in South Carolina. Since fountains are essentially a pump and pipes moving water continually, residential fountains are a subject W.P. Law, Inc. knows well.

5 Tips for Installing DIY Fountains

    WP Law - Monday, April 22, 2013

DIY fountains are popular with many homeowners because they are lovely works of art, and a great weekend project.

5 tips for installing diy fountains

DIY fountains require a basic understanding of electricity and water in order to work safely and function properly. While DIY fountains allow for a lot of individual artistic creativity, there are several practical matters that need to be considered to keep your dream from becoming a nightmare.

Here are some practical tips for your DIY fountain project.
    • Think about placement. Whether your fountain is going on a table top, a wall, the floor or the ground, make sure the foundation has the strength to hold the fountain once it is full of water and running.
    • Ask for help. Read your installation instructions, or ask your supplier for help with installing your masterpiece.
    • Call in experts. If you need an electrical line run or reinforcement placed, don't hesitate to pay a professional. If there is a chance that a DIY project can cause damage or danger, get a professional.
    • Place your pump(s). Depending on its size, your fountain will have one or two pumps that are designed to work underwater. They should be cleverly hidden in filter boxes in the lowest basin.
    • Plumb the system. Fountains are recirculation systems with the lowest basin acting as the reservoir that will hold the pumps. Water lines between lower and higher basins often require drilling holes, running tubing and caulking.

Now that your project is safely installed, enjoy it!

What Kind of Stone Works Best for Residential Fountains?

    WP Law - Monday, April 15, 2013

If you're looking to add a residential fountain, you also need to choose the right stone for your needs.

what kind of stone works best for residential fountains

Whether it is outside in the garden or inside in a foyer, a residential fountain adds a touch of elegance and peace to any home. Water trickling over stone makes a pleasant, soothing sound that seems to invite occupants and guests alike to, “Come and rest beside me.”

The right stone for any fountain depends on your preference and budget. Many people choose marble and granite because they look nice and will not wear down quickly. However, the most common material for residential fountains is cast stone.

Cast stone is a concrete-like material that is prized for its beauty, and versatility. It can be made to imitate many different types of rocks including marble, granite, limestone, and quartz. Often, it is stronger than the material that it imitates. Because it can be cast in its final shape, it doesn't have to be carved or drilled. This means that cast stone can be cost effective without looking cheap.

This building material has been around since the middle ages where it was used to decorate palaces and churches. It was known, even then, as the perfect material to add decorative embellishments to the grandest of structures.

Residential fountains made of cast stone can add the same beauty to a modern home. You can choose from a wide variety of looks and then relax, knowing that your fountain will remain as a treasured part of your home or grounds for many years to come.

    What is LED Landscape Lighting

    Shedding some light on LEDS

One of the most remarkable things to happen in the lighting field is LED’s. First made back in the 1960s to replace control panel bulbs, LEDs have become the new replacement bulb for just about every need, including landscaping lighting. This has taken place because of three important reasons.
    1. Power: LED bulbs only require a fraction of the power that standard lighting does. For example, to replace a 35 watt halogen bulb you only need to use an LED light that requires 6.5 watts.

    2. Longevity: One of the biggest selling points of LED lights is the fact that they last so long. Incandescent bulbs only have a lifespan of about 700 hours. LED lights can last much longer with an estimated 11 and a half years of continuous burning for a single bulb.

    3. Cost: Although they seem to cost more upfront than other landscape lighting options, if you factor in the lifespan of the bulb this may be the only light you will need to buy while you live in your home.

Outdoor grills and kitchens are increasing in popularity as more and more families are moving their entertaining outside.

Here are eight ideas to consider before you build your outdoor kitchen.

    • Keep functionality in mind: While designing your outdoor kitchen, make sure you keep functionality in mind. The refrigeration area, cooking area and sink area should be in close proximity.

    • Purchase low-maintenance materials: Choose materials that will withstand the harsh outdoor elements like, stainless steel, or natural stone.

    • Complement your home’s design: Make sure the kitchen design complements the architecture design of your home and landscaping.

    • Consider the flow of traffic: Keep the traffic flow in mind when designing your kitchen. Consider the dining areas, recreation areas, and cooking areas when planning. Make sure there’s enough room in all of these areas.

5 Types of landscape lighting for your home

Homeowners spend a lot of time, and money making their homes functional, appealing, and comfortable to live in, both inside and outside. One of the areas they tend to forget about is landscape lighting.

Landscape lighting is an affordable way to add functionality, comfort and elegance to your outdoor landscape. Lighting not only adds beauty to your outdoors, but offers safety, as well.

There are many types of outdoor lighting fixtures available. Here are a few:

    • Well Lights: Well lights are partially embedded in the ground and direct light upward. Well lights are ideal for highlighting specimen trees or architectural features of your home. Well lights should be used with a grate or other cover to keep mulch and other debris from collecting on top of the fixture.

    • Path Lights: Path lights are most commonly used to provide “pools” of light along walkways and garden paths. Path lights can also be used in the land scape to accent shrubs and garden art as well as bring light to a dark corner or your garden

    • Bullet Fixtures: Bullet fixtures work great to highlight trees and shrubs. They can also be installed in the canopy of large specimen trees and directed downward to provide a moonlight effect. Bullet lights can also be used as “wall washers” to highlight stone work or other interesting architectural features.

    • Deck Lights: Deck lights are usually installed on railings and steps. They come in a wide variety of shapes and styles and are great for giving your deck or patio a nice soft mood.

    Winter Proofing Your Residential Fountains

    Flip Law - Thursday, November 08, 2012
    residential fountains

Residential fountains in cold regions need to be prepared for winter.

If the temperatures in your region drop below freezing, then you need to winter proof your residential fountains to prevent them from being damaged. Your fountain is a thing of beauty, and needs to be protected against the harsh elements of winter.

Here are the steps you need to take to winterize your residential fountains:

Step #1: Disconnect electricity: If the fountain is run on electricity, unplug the electric cords.

Step #2: Drain the fountain: Before the first frost arrives, drain the water from the fountain. Remove the pump and drain any water in it. Clean the pump, and store it in the garage, or indoors. Any water left in the fountain will freeze when the temperatures drop and can cause the fountain to crack.

Step #3: Cover the fountain: If it’s a small fountain, cover it and move it into the garage or storage shed. If it’s too large, or heavy to move, use a fountain cover, or blanket to cover the fountain. Fountain covers can be purchased to protect the fountain from moisture.

3 Tips to illuminate your outdoor space with landscape lighting.

The long dog days of summer are gone, and so is the extended daytime that came with summer. With earlier sunsets in the fall and winter, extending outdoor living is difficult unless you have landscape lighting to illuminate the night.

Fall weather is a great time to gather in the backyard, and nobody likes cutting their fun short because of darkness. That problem can be remedied by installing outdoor landscape lighting.

There are a wide variety of outdoor lighting options available to fit your lighting needs. Here are three tips to illuminate your outdoors:

    1. Draw out a plan: Draw out your outdoor space on a piece of paper. Indicate the areas you want the lighting installed. Indicate the locations of outdoor electrical outlets or possible locations for the low-voltage transformer.
    2. Define what the lighting will be used for: Decide what the lighting will be used for. Is it for security, to light an area to extend activities, or for decoration? There is a large variety of lighting fixtures available for every situation.
    3. Set your budget: Decide on an overall budget. Once your total budget is set, you’ll be able to determine how much you can spend on each area.

    Easy DIY Fountains for Homeowners

    Flip Law - Monday, October 01, 2012
    outdoor fountains

How to maintain your DIY outdoor fountains.

Maintenance on outdoor DIY fountains should be performed regularly to help maintain their beauty and keep them functioning properly. Your outdoor fountain collects dirt, leaves, twigs, and other debris. In addition to looking bad, this dirt and debris can contribute to poor water quality and can shorten the life of other fountain components such as the pump and nozzles.

Here are a few maintenance tips to keep your outdoor fountain running smoothly:

    1. Inspect the pump on a regular basis. The pump is probably the most critical component because it is what makes the water flow. Inspect the pump intake to make sure no debris has partially blocked the intake or has become lodged in the pump itself. If the pump begins making a loud noise it may be due to debris being lodged in the impeller or other excessive wear.

    2. Inspect all pipe and hose connections. Over time pipe and hose connections can begin to leak. These leaks can cause damage to structure surrounding the fountain.

    3. Clean the reservoir periodically. It is necessary to drain all of the water from the reservoir and clean the fountain periodically. This cleaning will remove any dirt and leaves that have settled to the bottom as well as any algae that may have accumulated. This is also a good time to clean any plugged fountain nozzles. Usually all you need is a garden hose and a stiff brush to clean the fountain. However, a pressure washer can make quick work of most residential water features. Be cautious when using a pressure washer because you can cause damage to some stone work and other finishes.

By periodically performing a few maintenance tips your DIY outdoor fountain will give you years of enjoyment.

Water Features - Is a Fish Pond Right for You?

    Flip Law - Monday, September 17, 2012
    water features

A fish pond or other water features offer wonderful refuge for area wildlife.

Adding a fish pond to your landscaping is a fun and creative way to express your unique style. A fish pond can add natural beauty to your landscaping and will attract a variety of wildlife to your yard.

Birds of all types, butterflies, insects, frogs and other small animals will flock to your water feature. If you don’t have an interest in attracting these types of animals, you may want to reconsider installing a fish pond.

Some of the wildlife that may be attracted to your pond can even be dangerous and bothersome to you. Mosquitos, bees, water snakes, spiders and squirrels, may become unwelcome in your yard. While squirrels may seem harmless enough, they tend to bother vegetable gardens.

Safety precautions should be taken if you have small children or small pets. Standing water can be tempting to small children and accidental drowning can occur.

There are many pros and cons to adding a fish pond to your garden that should be considered before installation. Know what they are and take the time to research the maintenance necessary to properly maintain your fish pond before you build.

    residential water features

5 safety precautions for residential water features.

If you are thinking about installing residential water features in your yard, and you have small children or small animals, you will need to consider safety. Children, animals, and even adults can fall into that water, and get hurt and possibly drown.

Here are several suggestions for safety precautions you should follow.

    • Pondless water features: Consider water features that don’t have standing water at the base to prevent accidental drowning of pets and small children.

    • Fencing around ponds: Ponds pose drowning threats and should be fenced off if there are small pets or children around. Another important thing to consider is that standing water attracts insects like mosquitoes that not only cause discomfort when they bite but also carry disease.

    • Electrical: Make sure all electrical installation is done by a professional electrician and has passed inspection.

    • Pond grids: Pond safety grids are ideal to protect children and pets from accidental drowning. Essentially, they are metal grids that lay over the top of the pond to prevent children and pets from falling into the ponds.

    • Supervision: Nothing beats adult supervision to prevent accidents. If you have water on your property, you should learn CPR in case someone has an accident involving water.

DIY Fountains - Should you hire a professional?

    Terry Brady - Thursday, May 24, 2012

DIY fountains can bring beauty to your landscaping, hire a professional for a job well done.

Building a water feature in your backyard yourself can be done, but to make things easier and to be assured the job is done right, hire a professional. There are so many things to consider before taking on such a huge project.

    •  Size & location: Before you begin you need to determine the size fountain you want and pick the perfect location. A water feature is a natural focal point in any landscape and adjoining areas can be well suited for entertaining.

    •  Power source: Most areas have strict codes when it comes to wiring the pumps and lighting associated with water features.  Using a qualified licensed electrician will ensure that everything is up to code and safe for you and your family to enjoy.

    •  Plumbing: In addition to the plumbing required for the water feature itself, a “make-up” water line must be run to the water feature.  This “make-up” water line is connected to your home’s existing plumbing and replaces the water in the water feature that is lost due to evaporation and splashing.

    •  Labor: Depending on the size and type of fountain you are installing, you should consider the amount of labor that will be involved.  Site preparation and rock placement comprise most of the labor in building a water feature.  This can be back breaking work, especially if you do not have the equipment that most contractors have.  If you are planning a large water feature, you may want to contact a pro.

    •  Permits: Before beginning the project you will need to check with your city to see if any permits are required.

Whether you choose to do it yourself or hire an expert, adding a fountain to your landscape is a great way to increase the value of your property and create a beautiful focal point.

DIY fountains have become more and more popular with homeowners over the years. It used to be that bird baths were the most common focal point of landscaping. Grill Selection - Going Green

    Green Grilling

In earlier blogs we discussed the four different fuel types for grill use. We also discussed combining some fuels for flavor enhancement and for smoking. Then the question came up “What is the environmental impact of the fuel types?” This is a very good question.

For the last several years we all have heard about going “Green” with cars, appliances, and less energy consumption overall for our homes, but really no discussion of grill and smokers until recently.

The center of the debate of which fuel leaves less of a carbon footprint is between charcoal and gas.  A gentle man by the name of Tristam West who is a researcher with the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory shared the following information on several online websites.

Currently in the US, 76 percent of Americans own at least 1 gas grill and 42 percent own more then one gas grill. Sixty one percent of gas grill owners use propane grills; 48 percent own a charcoal grill; 9 percent own a natural gas grill and only 7 percent own an electric grill. So, what are the carbon emissions of different fuel types for grills?  To answer this question lets look at an excerpt from an article by Collin Dunn.

“When it comes to carbon emissions, gas-powered grills win in a landslide. Tristam West, a researcher with the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory, compared the carbon output of gas, charcoal and electric powered grills when producing 35,000 Btu's per hour, a typical industry baseline. West's calculations showed that gas produced 5.6 pounds of carbon dioxide each hour, compared to 11 pounds for charcoal. As mentioned above, electrical grills produce a whopping 15 pounds of carbon dioxide for every hour at 35,000 Btu's, so aren't the best choice from the carbon perspective.”

This debate can even go deeper because fossil fuel gases are not a renewable resource.  Tristam goes on to state that lump or chunk charcoal is carbon neutral because it is made from virgin wood with no additives and it is a renewable resource.  The problem is that this is not manufactured in large quantities locally and may have to be imported from many continents away, which raises its carbon footprint.

As grill manufacturers continue to try to produce more fuel-efficient grills, whether it is gas or charcoal, the carbon footprint should become less.

The debate of “green grilling” will continue and it should be fun to follow.

    Bird Season

    Bird Season

It’s that time of year again: bird season. No, not the bird season where you can shoot your limit and grill your day’s birds wrapped in bacon.  No, I’m talking about South Carolina’s other state bird, the mosquito.

Mosquitoes are very common in our great state and can make summer activities like barbequing and patio gatherings completely unbearable. They are practically a part of life in the South and we all just have to deal with them. However, there are ways of taking back your backyard and enjoying the summer mosquito free.

    W. P. Law, Inc. offers a few different options when dealing with mosquitoes.  Bifen I/T is a sprayable broad spectrum insecticide that is very good at controlling many insects, including mosquitoes.  Simply add the recommended amount of Bifen I/T per gallon (as stated in the label) in a pump sprayer and mix thoroughly.  Spray in all the places mosquitoes like to hide: in all your shrub beds, any thick brush close to your house or porch, under decks, etc.  While you’re spraying for mosquitoes, go ahead and spray along the foundation of your house, along eaves, in the crawlspace, even in the garage to control spiders, roaches, whiteflies, thrips, fire ants, and most other crawling insects. Bifen I/T will not stain brick, wood, vinyl, concrete, or sheetrock.  Make sure to spray when you know there will be no rain for at least 24 hours (if you get an afternoon shower, you may need to reapply).  Also, be careful not to spray in any bodies of water: i.e. goldfish ponds, creeks, rivers, lakes, or drains leading to any of these. Bifen I/T will not harm pets or children.  The addition of a spreader sticker will aid in helping the Bifen I/T stick to what you are spraying and aid in rain fastness.

Another product W. P. Law, Inc. carries is called Cyzmic. Cyzmic is also a broad spectrum insecticide that controls mosquitoes, roaches, ants, spiders, whiteflies, thrips, etc. Cyzmic is unique in that it is a microencapsulated formula, which means the usage rates are much lower, and it is slow-release so it stays active much longer.  Another benefit of the microencapsulation is that it is much easier for flying insects, like mosquitoes, to pick it up, even with their light “footprint”.  Application of Cyzmic is similar to that of Bifen I/T, except for the usage rates and it is longer lasting.

Whether you decide to use Bifen I/T or Cyzmic, you can be confident that the backyard will be yours to enjoy mosquito (and ant, spider, roach, and whitefly) free.  So stop spraying yourself with Off and put away those citronella candles and tiki torches and feel free to grill all summer long. It is YOUR yard…

Principles of Grilling - Conduction, Convection, etc.

    Principles of Grilling

    Conduction, Convection and Radiant Heating

Recently a good friend of mine purchased a new smoker. He has only cooked on the smoker a couple times and with good success, but the other day he complained that he burned some ribs by accident. He commented that the heat just got away from him.

This unfortunate situation can happen as one is learning to use a new gas grill or even a charcoal smoker. In an effort to help prevent these situations from happening to future grillers, I thought it would be a good idea to discuss the science of proper grilling principles.

It is important to understand three scientific principles behind heat transfer as it refers to grilling.  Conduction, convection, and radiant heat (radiation) will be described below so you will be able to apply these ideas to your next grilling experience.

Conduction is the process of heat transfer by direct contact of the food to the heat source. This usually occurs at higher temperatures, thus creating a searing effect. Infrared grilling is a good example of conduction. Conduction also occurs at the grilling surface (grill grates).

Convection occurs when the heat is carried to the food that is being cooked. The use of some type fluid such as air, water and even oil will act as a carrier for heat transfer. In grilling, this process is also termed “indirect grilling”. Indirect grilling occurs when food is not in contact with the heat source. The food is cooked away from the heat and the heat is circulated around the food.  There many forms of convection grilling and the research on this matter is quite extensive. Convection or indirect grilling is a good method for slow smoking or grilling. Convection occurs at the top of the grill or smoker. Because of this, it is important to have a hood that seals properly.  A grill or smoker with thicker or heavier metals in the hood will help with the convection process by keeping the heat trapped longer.  Ventilation is important otherwise, the heated air does not circulate and will accumulate above the food instead.

Radiation is the transfer of heat by the direct exposure to the heat source. This is another form of conduction and is responsible for such things as grill marks. The food makes direct contact with the hot grill grates, the natural sugars and moisture of food erupt, thus caramelizing and leaving the charred markings.

Grill head shapes dramatically influence radiant and convection heating.  Units used for smoking characteristically have dome shaped hoods because they rely almost exclusively on convection cooking.  The dome forces heat to circulate around the food and keeps it from stagnating at the top.  A high quality grill will also use the same principle with the hood having a dome shape to help reflect and circulate the heat evenly across the cooking surface. This is why you will not find square or rectangular shaped hoods on quality grills.

With some food such as steak, fish, and some vegetables first cook using the conduction method and then configure the grill to cook using convection heating.  To configure the grill to do this, turn off all but one or two burners (depending on your size grill) and move the food on the grilling surface away from the direct heat.

Learning and applying these three simple principles will help you in becoming a grill master.

    Infrared Grilling

An infrared gas burner consists of ceramic plates surrounded by burner grates in a 304 stainless steel framing.
The gas BTU output of an infrared gas burner is no higher than that of a traditional gas burner, however, the ceramic plates   create an intense radiant heat from the burner.  The Napoleon series gas grills are able to obtain temperatures of 1800 degrees Fahrenheit in as little as 30 seconds.  The infrared unit does not use as much convection as a gas burner does to heat food.  Instead, the heat energy is absorbed directly by the food being cooked.

In short, to use an analogy, an infrared gas burner is to a gas grill as a super charger is to an automotive engine. Infrared gas burners boost the heat energy to a higher level.

What are some the benefits of using infrared?  First, is obviously the shorter grill times.  Some may say that infrared grilling produces more flavorful food because the intense direct heat seals the surface and enhances natural flavor for succulence and taste. The drippings from the food are instantly vaporized, adding a great natural flavor to food.  Because of this, flare-up is virtually eliminated.

Napoleon series grills that are equipped with infrared burners use these in combination with traditional burners for the following reason.  Infrared is used for searing meats quickly to lock in juices and flavor.  The temperature adjustment range is limited from 700 degrees to 1800 degrees, plus or minus.  Therefore, after searing takes place, the final cooking is performed over the gas burners.  The advantage to this two-step process is that cooking time is reduced, less gas is used and food can be prepared exactly to taste.

An example of how a steak might be prepared is as follows.  Sear the meat over the infrared sear grate for 2 to 3 minutes per side depending on thickness.  Slide the meat over to the gas burner and finish cooking to the preferred doneness.  Following this process will prevent the meat from being charred and tough.  Fish can be prepared the same way.  A popular fish for searing is Ahi Tuna.  Sear the tuna 2-3 minutes per side (you can stop here if you like the fish on the rare side), or finish the tuna over the burners.

Infrared grilling is a great way to cook a variety of foods. Most gas grill manufacturers who offer infrared on their grills will also provide recipes and tips for infrared grilling.  When you are shopping for your next gas grill, check out the Napoleon line  with infrared before you make a final decision.

    Fuel Combinations for Grilling

In a previous blog, we discussed the different fuel types for grilling and for smoking.  However, what about combining some of the fuel types for the purpose of flavor enhancement, is this even possible?  The answer to that question is, yes. In fact, most grill masters and barbecue experts use some type of fuel combination to enhance the flavors of their prepared food.
The way to achieve this is by selecting the right grill that offers an accessory or has a built in feature that will allow the addition of a secondary fuel source.

For example, Napoleon grills offer an accessory in the form of a charcoal tray that is placed on top of a gas burner. The grill user will use the primary fuel source to ignite the charcoal. Once the charcoal becomes a grayish/white color, the charcoal is ready for cooking.  Also by adding some wet chips of your favorite wood to the charcoal, a smoky flavor will enhance the   food that is being prepared.

Luxor grills have a built in feature, a smoker drawer. This feature has a smaller independent burner that will ignite the wet wood chips once placed in the drawer to produce the smoke flavoring.

Both of these options are great. Quality grill manufactures will have some type of options that are similar to allow the use of secondary fuel for flavor enhancement.

The combination of charcoal and wood chips with a gas grill can produce some great flavors to your next cook out. Do a little research, try a little experimenting, and taste the results for yourself.

    Fuel Types for Grills

When shopping for a new grill you must make a decision on the type of unit you want, by the fuel it will burn.  To help you decide, I will discuss the four primary types of fuel used and their pros and cons.

Most grills and fuels have their efficiencies expressed in BTU’s.  A BTU stands for British Thermal Unit, and is explained as the amount of heat needed to raise one pound of water one degree Fahrenheit.  This is the measurement used to state the amount of energy contained in a fuel. BTU can also designate the output of any heat-generating device. (see About.com Guide)

    Propane

The most convenient fuel type for grills is gas. It is great to walk outside open a gas valve on the grill and then push the ignition button. In ten minutes or less, you are grilling. So what are the costs associated with this convenience?

One pound of propane gas will generate 15,000 BTUs per one hour. The price of propane is .65 cents per pound or $2.70 per one gallon. There are 4.16 pounds of propane to one gallon.

Let us work out a common scenario for a typical gas grill owner. The output of a typical gas grill (for example), is 60,000 BTUs. The estimated cost of gas used, if the gas grill is operating at full output will be $2.60 per one hour. A 20-pound propane tank will hold 4.8 gallons of fuel, so in this scenario the owner of the propane gas grill will use the whole tank in about 4.5 to 5 hours at a cost of $13.00.**

The use of natural gas as fuel for grilling is another option. This fuel is measured in cubic feet. One cubic foot of natural gas will produce 1020 BTUs of heat energy per one hour. According to the South Carolina Electric and Gas website, the cost of natural gas is $10.50 per one thousand cubic feet or .0105 cents per cubic foot. The owner of a natural gas grill that has an output of 60,000 BTUs will use 58.82 cubic feet of natural gas at a cost of .62 cents per hour.**

    Charcoal

Charcoal is the third option of fuel for outdoor grilling and has been used by generations of grill enthusiasts. The most widely used charcoal is briquettes. This form of charcoal at one pound of product will yield about 9000 BTUs of heat energy per hour. To obtain 60,000 BTUs of heat energy for one hour we will need 6.6 pounds of charcoal briquettes at a cost of $2.60 to $4.29.  Another form of charcoal is hardwood lump charcoal. This charcoal produces about 13,000 BTUs of heat energy per one pound of product per hour.  Therefore, with hardwood lump charcoal it will take 4.6 pounds of product to produce 60,000 BTUs for one hour at a cost of $1.20-$3.00.**

    Wood Pellets

The fourth and final fuel option for the outdoor grill is wood pellets. Over the last 5 or 6 years, several manufactures have grills whose fuel is compressed wood pellets. The pellets are made from different types of wood that offer a unique smoke flavor to grilled foods.  These woods include apple, cherry, hickory and mesquite.  In researching wood pellets, I found that one pound of wood pellets would produce about 13,000 BTUs per hour.  Therefore, as we have seen from previous examples where we use 60,000 BTUs as our base line, it will take 4.6 pounds of product to produce that level of heat energy per hour. The cost per one 20-pound bag of wood pellets is between $14.60 and $18.95. Therefore, cooking on a wood pellet grill will cost about $3.35 to $4.35 per one hour.**

As someone who grills a lot, I have enjoyed grilling on all of these fuel types. Each fuel offers a different flavor and texture to grilled foods.  I also noticed the difference in the thermal transfer to the food, which was reflected in cooking time and the amount of fuel used.

What type of fuel is best for your next outdoor grill? It really comes down to your personal preference. The data above is some “food- for- thought”, when you are ready to make your next grill purchase.

** Costs based on figures obtained at the time of this writing.

How to “Season” a New Grill

CONGRATULATIONS! You just purchased a new gas grill. A lot of research took place to get this point and it was a long process. You made important decisions on fuel type, construction materials, finishes, grill sizes, and reviewed all the features and benefits.

Well, let’s fire up that new gas grill and get cooking? NOT!

What? Why not? You may ask?

That new gas grill has to be seasoned. Seasoning the grill will remove residues left over during the manufacturing process. This procedure will also create a “non-stick” surface on the grill grate.  The following process of seasoning of a gas grill is the same as it applies to charcoal and wood pellet grill models; however, it may require a little more effort for those units.

If the gas grill was preassembled, you need to inspect the insides for any pieces of packing material.  Remove the grill grates and check under and around the burners and gas orifices for packing or plastic wrap. After inspection, wipe down the inside of the grill with a soft rag, using warm soapy water and dry.  Do the same for the grill grates or any cooking surface.

If you are assembling the grill, perform the same inspection and clean as described above.

Next, follow all the instructions in the grill's manual as it pertains to starting the grill. We are now beginning the cook off or burn off process. It is best to allow the grill to reach a temperature of 400 to 500 degrees Fahrenheit for about 10 to 15 minutes. This will burn off oily residues left over from the manufacturing process and preheats the grill before seasoning can take place.

The final step is to season the grill grates. For this process, you will need a small bowl of vegetable or canola oil, a clean rag, and a set of tongs. The grill temperature of the gas grill should be about 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Using the tongs, dip the rag into the oil then slide the oiled rag along the grill grates. The oil should be allowed to bake on the grill grates for about ten minutes. Repeat this process of oiling the grill grates and baking them for 10 minutes.   Repeat this 3 to 4 times.

This process seems to be a little time consuming, but it is worth it. When finished, this will help prevent the food from sticking and burning on the grill. Furthermore, this process should eliminate any strange odors associated with new gas grills from penetrating the food.

Congratulations on seasoning your new gas grill. Enjoy!

    Grill Selection - Maintenance

    Grill Maintenance

When choosing a new grill, one of the most important and often over-looked aspects is that of maintenance.  Proper grill maintenance not only prolongs the useful life of the unit but will provide the owner years of enjoyment when cooking on a trouble free unit.  When researching your next big investment be sure to note not only the materials of which the unit is made but the ease with which such items such as the grill grates, sear grates, drip pan and gas burners can be accessed for cleaning or replacement.  If possible find a dealer and inspect the unit personally.  Look into the burner box of the grill and check to see if you will be able to clean this area easily.  What is the grill grating made of? Are they heavy chromed steel or cast iron? Both work equally well and sometimes the cast grates are reversible as well.  If possible ask to look at the owner’s manual.  Check the maintenance section in the manual.  Does the upkeep required by the manufacturer meet you expectations?

A high quality grill should not only have all the characteristics of the above but should be constructed of high quality components such as 304 stainless steel and heavy cast aluminum especially in the firebox.  Nuts, bolts, brackets and burners should be made of stainless as well.  All these components help keep the grill easy to maintain.

Generally speaking, proper maintenance involves thorough and timely cleaning of the cooking surfaces and the removal of debris which accumulates in the firebox and on the burners.  All too often we are only interested with cleaning the grates and pay little heed to what drops onto the burners.  If the grill develops hot spots during cooking, chances are the burners have become dirty or clogged which inhibits the flow of gas from the burner orifices which makes some sections of the burners hotter than others.  Burner failure may result if this uneven heating is prolonged.

A general maintenance schedule might be as follows:
    - Clean all grilling surfaces by brushing with a wire brush upon finishing cooking.
    - Every 3-4 months or sooner (if the grill is used heavily), inspect and clean the fire box.  Use a wire brush and a plastic putty knife to scrape the sides and bottom of the firebox and a small wire brush for the burners.  Once the process is complete, wipe out all particles with a soft rag or simply use a shop vacuum.
    - For heavy duty cleaning heat the grill to 400 degrees Fahrenheit then spray the cooking surfaces with white vinegar.  Wait a few minutes and brush as usual.
    - Protect the outside of the grill from the weather.

To make the job easier look for food safe cleaners and avoid using oven cleaners that contain sodium hydroxide as this will eat through aluminum.

    Grill Sizing

In the process of researching for a new gas grill, one of the most commonly asked question is, “What size gas grill do I need?”
Presented are some deciding factors involved in answering that question.
    Budget:
One of the most important is that of budget. Prices for gas grills cover a wide range.  When it comes time to consider buying a gas grill, remember that this could be a heavily used appliance and it is a good idea to invest in the highest quality product while staying within your budget.
    Materials:
A durable grill will have a grill head of 304 stainless and heavy cast aluminum, with the burners and fasteners made of 304 stainless steel as well.  Choices for the grate materials can vary from heavy chrome steel, 304 stainless steel, or cast iron.
    Options:
A rotisserie unit is necessary for outdoor grilling for items like whole roasts, chicken, turkey and ribs.
Sear units built into the grill are useful for sealing in juices for meats before the actual grilling takes place.
A side gas unit allows for stove- top cooking while the main grill is used.
What size grill do I need?
For a family of 4-6 people a 30-inch grill would be adequate.  A grill this size can easily accommodate 10 half pound burgers, 8-10 pounds of large cut meats and with a rotisserie, two whole chickens of 3 to 4 pounds can be cooked at one time!
If you entertain on a regular basis, a 36-inch grill would be quite adequate.  If cooking is your passion then go for it with a 40, 42 or 55-inch unit!  If you go this route, an outdoor kitchen featuring the larger grill is more advantageous than a 36-inch stand alone because you won’t have to scurry back and forth between the house kitchen and the grill, plus guest love to socialize where food is cooking.

    Grill Selection - Construction

    Cameron Huntley - Wednesday, December 29, 2010
    Grill Selection,
    Making the Right Choice
    Construction

When purchasing a new grill, we consumers, first search for the grills that seem to be affordable or the grill that looks most appealing.  The internet is a great place to begin researching grills but with such huge selections to choose, the task can be overwhelming.   When thinking about purchasing a new gas grill, an appliance that will stand up to the rigors of cooking, the elements, and provide years of trouble free service, we are concerned about getting the most for each dollar spent, especially in these economic times.  Below are some pointers to use when making a decision on which gas grill to purchase.
First, let us consider what we are purchasing. What type of cooking are we going to perform?  Will it be a stand-alone unit or part of an outdoor kitchen?  Think of the grill as another kitchen appliance, although it will stay outside. Even more reason the grill should be safer and more durable than the appliances used inside the home. Correct?
Let us start with the construction of the most important part of a gas grill, the burners.
Two types of gases, propane and natural gas fuel gas grills.  These gasses burn at relatively high temperatures and an inexpensively made burner will break down rapidly causing a multitude of problems, including being that of a fire hazard.  The following, taken from a recent news release-
“Barbecue grill fires and domestic propane tank explosions are a major source of personal injury in the United States each year. According to recent statistics from the U.S. Fire Administration, a division of FEMA, some 6,500-barbecue grill fires injure Americans accounting for property loss of over $27 million annually.”

Grills fired by natural gas are not mentioned, only because there are more propane gas grills sold in the US annually.  Natural gas grills require the same attention to safety and quality of materials used.  Either type of gas fired grill is safe as long as the units are used according to the manufactures instructions, maintained, and the consumer makes a conscience effort to educate themselves on the quality of equipment they are purchasing.
When researching a new gas grill, look for manufactures that offer a lifetime warranty on the gas burners.  Then check, to see what materials are used in their construction.  The two types of materials commonly found in higher-end burners are cast iron with a heat resistant coating and 304 stainless steel.  The cast iron is fairly durable until the coating wears out.  The 304 stainless wears longer and is a better choice.

Remember, we are not just purchasing a new gas grill, but a new appliance for our homes. This new gas grill should bring family and friends together to have a good time, not an accident.
Controlling the flame on a gas grill is the difference between a delicious well-prepared meal and a charred hockey puck. Most quality gas grills will have a drip pan or sear grates just above the gas burner and just below the cooking grates. These sear grates or drip pans help distribute the heat evenly across the cooking area. This will help to prevent flame- up and lessen the likelihood of hot spots. The sear grates or drip pan components are made from stainless steel or aluminum. Again, for the longevity of these components and easy clean up, stainless steel is the best material to use.
The firebox on a gas grill, what is it? The firebox is the lower portion of the grill housing in which the gas burners, the sear grates or drip pan and cooking gates are placed.  It is important that the firebox be insulated by the use of thicker metals such as cast aluminum or stainless steel. This will help with the cooking efficiency by using less gas and shortening the cooking times
Last, the grill hood, which is the upper portion of the grill housing that, is hinged, should seal or mesh tightly with the firebox. This will allow better convection during cooking.
Ventilation is important for gas grills. Some gas grills allow for adjustable ventilation in the grill hood, while other grills have fixed ventilation in the grill hood.  In addition, there is some ventilation adjustment at the flute cover, which is the front on the gas burner just outside of the firebox. However, with too little ventilation, the gas burner will go out and there is a potentially dangerous raw gas situation to deal with. If this ever occurs, cut the gas supply off at the main valve, raise the grill hood and wait at least 30 minutes before attempting to reignite the gas grill. Most of the gas grill manufacturers have ventilation already build in the hoods.
The metal materials used for grill hoods are steel or cast aluminum with a high temperature powder coating. For a more commercial look, some grill manufacturers use various types of stainless steel, but be aware that some cheaper stainless will develop surface rust in time, such as 400 series stainless steel. Therefore, if you want stainless steel and the grill is going to be exposed to the elements, ask for 304 stainless in the grill hood. While most of the other powder coated grill hoods and lesser grade stainless steel look good when new, oxidation over time will discolor them and surface rust will occur.
